Next up are Speedwitch kits for an NP 50' SS boxcar and Soo Line 40' SS boxcar.

Southern LC "Boxcar" With Vent?

Good friends, While digitizing my old negatives, I ran across this photo of Southern 50' PS-1 34242 shot in Charlottesville circa 1987. If I read George Elwood's Fallen Flags web site correctly this is not a boxcar at all, but a covered hopper (type LC, note the roof hatches). Photos on Elwood's site show these cars were often covered in some sort of white powder, which I suspect is kaolin. According to Ed Hawkins' PS-1 article in RMJ 1995, there were no original Southern PS-1s with this number, so it must be a conversion / renumbering. These are not listed my October 1958 ORER. Can anyone comment on whether these cars were converted during our period of interest (as in 1961 or before)? Also of interest is what appears to be a small end vent (see the partial view). I see this on other converted PS-1s on the Fallen Flags site. Is this indeed a vent, and to what purpose? Yours Aye, Garth Groff 🦆

Thanks to all who replied to my question about the square REA herald standinng on one corner. I have both the RPC's cited and Vic Roseman's bookut unfortunately we stilldon't seemto know when the herald with its initial internal lettering was first used on REA rolling stock. My cut-off date is 31 December 1948 so I guess I'll use my one reefer with the original style of the herald until someone can prove me worng after which I may continue to use it under "modeler's license'. Missouri-Illinois RR book plug
For the past 2 1/2 years I’ve been working on a book covering the Missouri-Illinois Railroad. The book went to the publisher three weeks ago (740 photos and 76,000 words). There’s a chapter on the freight cars used by the M-I and the prior roads that made up the M-I in 1921 that maybe of interest to this group. reefer MDT 13755 on display at the Fulton County Museum

Hi List Members,
While this is way past my own era of interest, I
thought maybe some members might be interested in seeing the reefer MDT 13755
which is on display at the Fulton County Museum in Indiana.
I stumbled upon it while driving from Indianapolis
to South Bend.
It has been repainted grey, but the original
lettering is still barely discernable under the new paint.

REA was of course founded in March of 1929 as a merger of several competing regional agencies, and while I can not confirm the uses of a diamond logo by REA right from the start, I do have seen early 30's images with such. Many of the predecessor lines also used a diamond shaped logos (including both American Railroad Express and Wells Fargo & Co).

ATSF Automobile cars/door color
I came across a grainy color film on Facebook that shows what appears to be black doors on a 50’ ATSF Automobile car. It has the standard herald, but no maps or slogans, just the word “Automobile” on the right side.
I’m aware many roads used black doors and white stripes to distinguish auto cars with special equipment, but didn’t know Santa Fe was one of them. SFMO Painting and Lettering Guide by Richard Hendrickson has no references to such a practice. My guess is this is a pre-1940 scheme, or perhaps a short-term experiment, and if so, how late could one expect to see a car like this before it was repainted?
