Re: Help with freight car list

Actually, there is a contradiction between the two lists in the report. The first list shows HERX 10916. The second list shows HCRX 10916. All the other HERX cars are numbered in the 2000’s. HCRX would be Houston Creosote Co.

Here's one. Shipper would have been Frontier Chemical, which at the time was a division of Vulcan Materials, now Oxy (Occidental Chemicals).
This car is unmarked, but that's not necessarily indicating whether or not it was on lease. I'd say it was certainly possible that the cars could have moved empty sometimes, but more than likely a loaded car went to a customer with full containers and returned with empty containers from the last shipment. I have numerous photos of these cannister flat cars, and they are always loaded with their cannisters. The precise style of cannisters does vary - perhaps related to the commodity, or time period? They all have 15 cannisters in my photos. Was ACF the builder of all these cars? Tim O'

When I lived out East during the 1980's there was a small water treatment plant in Lansdale PA that still received these cars. I believe that the cars were returned with empty canisters aboard. I never saw a car without them, but practices may vary - especially during our timeframe. Jim Kubanick

The topic of the P&WV derailment got me to look up Sudan, PA. I didn't get as far as trying to track down the location of this siding because the first thing I saw on the Google map was Narrow Gauge Road. It goes under the railroad bridge that spans Pigeon Creek, at the bridge's south end. At the bridge's north end, incidentally, is Cracker Jack Road. Anyone familiar enough with the area to comment?
Surely this has something to do with freight cars..... Ron Merrick

They are, indeed. They carried a group of cylindrical cannisters that could be unloaded separately, and transported to various parts of a plant, most often water treatment plants.

Hi List Members,
I have a builders image of VSX 20, it is a
canister car, ACF lot 188. It rides on archbar trucks. No date on the
image.
I also have a builders image of VSX 103, it is
more conventional tank car, ACF lot 9471 dated 30 Apr 1923. The car is on
archbar trucks.
Finally, I also have a builders image of VSX
106, a conventional tank car, ACF lot 20 dated 17 Aug 1925. The
car is also on archbar trucks.

Those brass models were imported by MTS way back when. I made new tanks out of aluminum tubing, making the car lighter but still on the heavy side. Jim Kubanick Morgantown WV
