Sorry if I missed the reply to Bob’s queston…the Plug Door in the fully open position would interfere with the normal inboard mounting location of the grab irons…so they overlap the ends to clear. Charlie Vlk
There must be a good reason for this...so what is the reason?

The large lettering with periods after the initials went both diagonal and straight line. The smaller lettering also made it onto some of the 50' cars too (SP&S 14241 50' DD boxcar in June 1967 Jim Parker photo).

very interesting. But how did it work? Of course I can imagine a knives blade doesn't like sand, but if you take a sharp stone (and I guess these weren't rare even then... :-)) the sand wouldn't be any obstacle?

In my stash of unbuilt kits, I have West Shore Line kit #9103 - New York Central MOW Boom Car. I seem to recall that they offered a B&O Wagontop covered hopper as well, although I can’t find that kit at the moment. I also have a half-dozen or so resin kits that came out under the NEB&W ‘Green Dot’ label, presumably done under commission with F&C. These include several Rutland prototypes as well as an Illinois Central SS box car, several different ‘PS-O’ boxcars and a Reading war emergency hopper.

Hello, Folks... Attached is a spreadsheet in which the 25,000 New Haven wood-sheathed, steel underframe cars built 1902-1912 are documented. They were all retired from service by 10-1950. There is a lot here to keep your eyeballs busy and which also corrects some misconceptions about renumbering and construction (like the history of the SS cars). The spreadsheet was constructed in service to my work on a database of all the box cars built 1-1910 through 12-1944.

Dennis and all, the boxcar under-frame was modified in that the last cross members on each end were moved toward the center of the car to allow clearance for the 33" wheels on the 7'-0" wheelbase trucks that were salvaged from C&NW wooden milk cars. The trucks formerly offered by the C&NW HS are correct in both respects. The cars also had Viking roofs and LN brakes. Hope this helps. Mark Feddersen Denver, Iowa
