New '37 AAR box cars with Deco and NSC-2 ends

Hi everyone-

I have had some extra Intermountain cars shipped to me just this week. I have one each of the B&O Deco end car and one each of the Canadian NSC-2 end cars; A CN and an O.N. car.

This A&EC and D&LW cars seem to be standard '37 AAR cars, I have one each.

I've never seen one on any Soo car with a fishbelly UF, nor is it shown on the Haskell & Barker drawings of the early twenties cars (the prototype for that kit) so surmise they were only on the later cars. The only one of the 1926, 28, 29, and 30 built cars I've been able to inspect is the 1929 car at the Illinois Railway Museum, where those pix were taken.

I just found the instructions for the Sunshine kit, and now understand what you are referring to.  Neither the instructions for the Speedwitch kit or Ted Culotta’s article on the cars showed this part, so I didn’t include it on the model.  I don’t know if this part was unique to the later cars that were modeled by the Sunshine kit, or if it was used on all series of Soo sawtooth boxcars.  I also looked at a number of photos of Soo sawtooth boxcars.  The few that showed the brake cylinder did not seem to contain the mechanism shown on the Sunshine instructions.  Hopefully one of our Soo Line experts can shed more light on this subject.

Also the chain on most applications consists of three round rungs with an elongated rung on each end.

I make up schackels from .010 brass wire for this.
Sounds complicated but is really easy and quick.  Also looks great.

Your memory is pretty good - Accurail does make a rthin/3/3 end for some of it's reefer kits. Bill Welch posted a teaser shot a year or so ago ahead of one of his clinics. The pic did include a rthin/3/4 end. I queried him off list and he turned me on to the Accurail ends. I've got four sets here that I'm attempting to convert into a viable master suitable for casting enough in resin to cover my needs (Four dozen or so for GN, SP&S, and perhaps other cars). Unfortunately, my skills at removing ladders, brake housings, and tack boards from curve services is lacking . . . . . . ☹

Yep Almost 20K cars with the IDN-2 end. I'm doing some Excel work to see if I can't do a nice job of summarizing Ed's data by various IDN-2 configurations - maybe a nice summary might temp someone to consider marketing additional end options.

Yes, I frequently get taken to the group home page instead of the attachment I had clicked on in an e-mail.  This is primarily .jpg's in my case but I have also come across .pdf's that won't load.  I have found that I can sometimes view the offending attachment by going into the list of messages on the groups.io site and clicking on the link there, but it is not always available.

These are the AMC version of the 1920s ARA steel-sheathed box, with the "innie" version of the early Dreadnaught end.

This drawing shows the taller Dreadnaught end on N&W class BT, but the general profile is the same:

Yeah, it does, but I don't think the Viking name was in use in 1916, being a trade name Chicago-Cleveland transitioned to some time around WWII.
