Re: Intermountain Deco end XM'x and others For Sale
Ed Hawkins
David, Des Plaines Hobbies offered the special run of A&EC models that were made by Innovative Model Works (IMWX). The kit I purchased is catalogue no. DPH193, A&EC 1045, having square-corner 4-5 Dreadnaught ends and HE. 3-54 reweigh stencils. It was formerly a Southern car built in 1938. The model came with a wood running board, whereas the A&EC cars received replacement Morton running boards. The IMWX tooling was later sold to Red Caboose ca. 1996, however, I have found no evidence from Red Caboose product lists that the company ever offered the A&EC model. Regards, Ed Hawkins

Intermountain Deco end XM'x and others For Sale
David
You're a year too early. Southern sent 100 of their AAR '37 boxes to A&EC in 1954. This may be the first time Intermountain has run the A&EC scheme, but I know it's been done before in HO (probably by Red Caboose, or maybe Des Plaines?).

The book still has a place on my bookshelf next to later and dare I say better resources. John White's historical writing is simply excellent, and in TGYF the text, at least prior to 1930, is entirely reliable.(For later years, Duke even added text.) But Duke added a lot of the photos throughout the book and wrote the captions, so unfortunately you cannot necessarily trust ANY figure caption in the book. It's too bad, as this book would be a great resource if done as John White intended. OTOH, as Duke perceived, it would have had lesser sales appeal if it tapered off in the 1920s, which is where White's personal interests tapered off. Tony Thompson

It is indeed an attractive herald. However. Can't speak for other eras, but in my modeling year of 1953, the ORER entry for A&EC says that "freight cars owned are not employed in interstate commerce." Tony Thompson

Re: Walthers #932-5850 Single Sheathed Auto boxcar
#932-5850
A long, long time ago, I addressed this issue by shortening the Walthers car to 40 feet and using the auto door end from a Funaro & Carmelengo kit, since it came with a spare end, anyway. The result was pretty reasonable. Steve Hile

I took a break from working on the layout after the first of the year and decided to build some steam era freight cars. I completed two plastic kits and two resin kits. BS 6528 is a 10' IH War Emergency Boxcar offered by Sunshine as Kit No. 29.2. I have others of this series from Sunshine in my stash and hope to get to them soon. This kit was a delight to build as everything just seemed to fit together well. I did substitute a Kadee running board for the kit supplied etched part. CB&Q 46840 is Sunshine Kit No. 22.3 and represents a CB&Q XA-14C class boxcar. This car is the “plain Jane” of this group of cars, many of which were rebuilt to become the “Bomber Box Cars” that were recently discussed on the Steam Era Freight Car List. I did have to overcoat the kit supplied decals with several coats of Microscale Liquid Decal Film. Weathering on both cars was done with Pan Pastels. Jim Brewer

4+ years to finish a resin project? I have a couple of those, but do get them done eventually, too. Usually as you note, when certain data or parts becomes available. Really nice build of a car you don't normally see, and with character that makes it stand out. Plus I have a liking for single sheaths anyway.

Re: Walthers #932-5850 Single Sheathed Auto boxcar

Donald B. Valentine <riverman_vt@...>
I asked:
"In a word: Rubbish. Sorry to disappoint" . . And Ben Hom was Kind enough to pointout the two articles from Richard Hendrickson in the July 1996 and July 1997 issues of RMJ, the first dealing with the similar MDC model and the latter the Walthers version. Fortunately I had long since photocopied both articles and placed them in protective sleeves in three ring binders that I use for such things so both are here at hand. I was hoping that some new or additional information on the Walthers version in particular migh have been unearthed in the last 26 years but perhaps not. In all due respect, Bill, iyour response didn't disappoint me. You simply summed up your feelings in one word the way I've been known to do myself on more than one occasion. If one were to use the end door supplied with the Walthers kit without considerably reworking it I'd have to agree but if one can find a prototype and use the Walthers car with two standard ends "rubbish" might be a bit strong. Clearly I have some more research to do but thanks to both of you for your replies. Cordially, Don Valentine
