Re: Hooker Chemical, Tacoma
Chuck Soule
It's not uncommon to see mothballed flattops in Tacoma Tideflats air photos from the 40s, 50s, and maybe even into the 60s. They were escort carriers built by the shipbuilding company at the tip of the peninsula that the Hooker Plant was on. My understanding is that they were in the process of being completed when WW2 ended, and were mothballed right there without ever having been commissioned. I may not be exactly correct about their service histories, but they were definitely mothballed in the immediate vicinity of the Hooker plant.
When the Hooker plant was modeled on the PSMRE layout at the Washington State History Museum, the backdrop painted behind it included not only the stockpile of salt for the plant, but also paintings of a freighter directly behind the stockpile and an escort carrier to the left. The ships copied after art on the tops of the boxes for model ship kits for an escort carrier and a freighter from the 40s-50s era. I just tried to find a photo on the PSMRE site to no avail, and I can't go take pictures because the museum is closed for the duration. My ramblings are getting a bit off track for freight cars, but I hope you find the context interesting. We just HAD to have the Hooker plant on the PSMRE layout so we could appropriately switch chemical tank cars showing the Hooker paint scheme, especially with "Return to Tacoma" on them. Chuck Soule

A little to the
left, which would be east, is where the USN used to have three Minesweepers
live. They were tied up next to a group of warehouses and were
just down (west) the tital cut from a power house next to a bridge that
crossed this tital cut.

That would be the USS Intrepid at what
would have been, I believe, Pier 86 @ W. 46th Street which is a
few blocks south of the Manhattan Cruise terminal (today) which
happens to sit on the Hudson River, which is incorrectly named
being that it is a tidal estuary, as the tidal flow extends up to
and past Albany 100 miles north.
Tim Barney - sitting about 1/4 mile
from the old, long gone, O&W Kingston Branch and the
Ellenville Station/Freight Depot (for some steam era content)

I just checked out Mather meat reefers on Ebay after my Mather post just minutes ago. There are a good number of both Red Caboose RTR and kits offered, almost all at much less expense than mine. I added some sheet lead in 4 places to get it's weight up. I think I added about 3 oz but didn't put it on the scale yet. Fenton

Looks great Fenton. I have one of these in my stash and a set of Teds decals. Did you add any weights or is the car weight ok out of the box?

Last month I asked for information on the C&O 1930 40' automobile boxcars. Thank you to everyone that responded. The information provided was very helpful. I just completed the car today.
This is a F&C one-piece body kit. I added TMW Buckeye trucks, Red Caboose 7 rung ladders, DA tackboards, DA roping rings, HiTech Details air hoses and brackets, DA coupler cut levers, Yarmouth cut lever brackets and brake levers, with Grandt Line turnbuckles and DA chain used on the brake gear. I used TruColor TCP-219 C&O Freight Car Red paint with Speedwitch decals. Since the car was repainted only 10 months before the date I model, a light coat of weathering was applied using Pan Pastel Raw Umber and Neutral Grey Extra Dark.
Sincerely, Rich Remiarz Vadnais Heights, MN

Re: Hooker Chemical, Tacoma
Ralph W. Brown
Hi Don,
That “flat top” would be the USS Intrepid (CV-11), the battleship USS
Massachusetts (BB-59) is in Fall River, MA, and the USS Albacore (AGSS-569) is
in Portsmouth, NH. I’m sure there are others as well. Unfortunately
the USS Skipjack (SSN-585), “the first, the fastest and the finest nuclear
powered teardrop hull” was decommissioned and “recycled” in the 1990s
after more than 30 years in front line service.
I was assigned Skipjack in my youth. The State Pier in New London,
CT, was our homeport back then (1963-‘64). I used to cut through the CV
yard going to and from the train station. The CV still had one or more
wood cabooses in the yard. I like to be able to find the slides I shot at
the time. I even managed to get an interior shot that took from an end
platform with the camera up against a somewhat grungy window in the door.
The result was a bit dark, but still pretty good under the circumstances.
There probably were other cars I should have photographed, but just couldn’t get
past my fascination with those cabooses. I don’t recall when I last saw
it, but I love to find it and the numerous other railroad photographs, mostly
slides, I’ve taken over the years.
Pax,
