1.  What color were GM&O flat cars in 1952 - 1954 time period?  The 42' 50T "USRA-ish" ones.

2.  I am assuming that A&WP flat cars and GA RR gondolas (specifically the ones rebuilt from flat cars) of that period were freight car brown (Langley Jr., Hanson & Silcox won't argue) .  Does anyone here dissent?  Does anyone dissent from assumption that the GA/A&WP freight car brown resembled the L&N color, except maybe a bit more LIGHT brownish that pure oxide red?

3. Does anyone know or a photo of one of the few CofGa 40' 1937 door-and-a-half boxcars with SUPERIOR doors?

4.  There's an online rumor of the existence of HO scale Farmall tractor decals.  Does such a thing actually exist??

To my knowledge, Fox trucks, and similar pressed steel (or built up) trucks were never banished from interchange.  They slowly disappeared, probably because they were all on older cars with K brakes for which railroads chose not to invest in any rebuilding.

Thanks.  

I did look through my limited resources, but did not find anything that looked like "it".  Besides the apparent long wheelbase, it seems that the bottom edge of the sheet metal is lower than on other sheet metal trucks.

Two things, to me, are of interest:  what is this truck, and why is it running in 1938

This car appears to be being used in a train in mainline service.

I thought sheet metal trucks were long gone by this time.

Yes. At one time Oddball Decals made them. He printed off an ALPS printer and sometimes you would need two sets to make sure they cover. Oddballs is out of business as far as I know and has been pursued by more than a few people (including the state of Kansas) for not sending decals after people playing for them. He also burned two Kansas City area hobby shops that handled mail orders for him.

Your best source would be to hope a set shows on eBay.

Striker Castings

Getting into the weeds here but should be appreciated by the list I think: 

Were striker castings proprietary to a vendor or the car builder? I have found a couple of styles used on USRA gons, though most of the builder photos look to be a consistent style, and a bit different from the general arrangement drawings. 

If they were proprietary, are there any resources or articles covering different designs? I've been browsing CBCs and hobby press online with no luck. 

I'm working on a USRA 50-ton composite gon in proto:48 and trying to figure out the striker casting. The best photo I could find is attached (a detail of an image of a W&LE car pulled from Ted Culotta's 2018 St. Louis RPM presentation on his build of an L&M gon). I'm modelling an SP version (ex. El Paso & Southwestern). 

If I can find drawings, the plan is to build a master and cast the assemblies I need, then incorporate them into scratch-built draft gear to house the Protocraft scale couplers... Needless to say, the entire project has ground to halt trying to figure this part out!

There were other brands of pressed steel trucks besides Fox. Cloud comes to mind, and I think Pressed Steel Car Co. had a proprietary design (along with pressed steel archbars). IIRC, Fox trucks were actually an English invention (per Richard Hendrickson). Fox trucks with a wheelbase of about 3 1/2 feet were, and I believe still are, used under some Festiniog Railway passenger carriages.

My experience is consistent with Nelson's, with various flat finishes.  I recall one situation where I experienced the 'frosting' of the flat coat, and I let it dry for 20 minutes and resprayed with a light coat of lacquer thinner (probably automotive grade, it's what I generally use) and the frosting disappeared.

I have also found that, when spraying Tamiya rattle can acrylic lacquer paint, you do need to spray on successive light coats and let each one dry.  I have to spray on our apartment balcony, since I  have no paint booth, where it is breezy, and I've gotten impatient and not waited until the wetness is gone, and also sprayed too close to the model.  A couple of times, the paint produced small 'bubbles' of paint that do not dry flat.  Those were my mistakes, and other that that, Tamiya paint in spray cans is amazing and easy to use. 

BTW, every brand of paint I've used has its own characteristics, and we, as modelers, need to experiment and learn their peculiarities.  Going from Floquil lacquer to AccuPaint was one of my biggest leaps.

The USRA Gondolas in 1918 H&B Lots 5176, 5180, 5183 had pin & chains for both side & end doors.  Alternative mechanisms, panels and other details were made for the SSC 1932 USRA alternate.  I haven't yet run into the General Arrangement drawings, they are most likely there as well.  The butt plate & hinges, pin & chains, brake details and other drawings have been scanned. 

The door mechanism drawings for drop bottom gons usually are vendor drawings, not manufacturer drawings.  While a general arrangement drawing will show some information, the URE (or other vendor) drawings are referenced, though rarely copied for such.

there is a gon, three cars to the right of the KCS vinegar car.  It has sheet metal trucks.  I would call them Fox, but I see that they have a longish wheelbase.

It seems odd to me that sheet metal trucks would be running at this date.  The car appears to be Union Pacific.  To me.

I wonder at the thoughts in this group on the matter.

I’ve had sputtering rattle cans of Dullcoat ruin freight car finishes. I swore those off many years ago. I had used rattle cans of Model Master Clear Flat with good success before I set up a spray booth.

 

I now prefer to use the airbrush to spray Model Master Flat Clear Acryl with a few drop of the appropriate freight car color to add a chalky appearance to start the weathering process. The flat + drops of color also cuts the whiteness of decals. You can compare the before and after on a boxcar in this blog post.

SP&S had two Lidgerwood's, L-1 and L-2 that were put in service in 1910. The machinery for L-1 was purchased from Northern Pacific in 1908 and the car was assembled by the SP&S from parts from wrecked Dirt Car No. 1071 which was destroyed at Vancouver in August 1910. Its not clear if the machinery for L-2 was purchased used or new, it was mounted on Columbia River & Northern Flat Car No. 331. Both Lidgerwood's were retired in 1938 on AFE 6383.

The original USRA gons used a windup shaft mechanism for the doors. Wine door locks were used on a number of copies built in the 1920s, and sometimes retrofitted to the originals.
