Doug, Thanks for the loading diagrams. I find it interesting to see that the tractors were fastened to each other with stranded cable in a addition to cabled to the stake pockets. Bud Rindfleisch

Re: FARMALL TRACTOR loads

Thanks Bruce, I kind of thought so. Yes, the Farmall M's are quite large so diagonal seems feasible. There's a picture on line I saw with a dock right alongside the flat car, so maybe a couple short planks would make unloading easy from the diagonal position. Bud Rindfleisch

Re: FARMALL TRACTOR DECALS
Garth Groff and Sally Sanford
Chuck, I presume you are talking about this puppy: https://www.walthers.com/farm-tractor-2-pack-assembled-red . Definitely a Farmall, by the Lowey-design grill and the swoosh above the engine. I don't know enough about tractors to say is this an accurate model, and if so, what series it is from. Curiously, or perhaps not so curiously knowing Walthers, the also offer the same tractor in green: https://www.walthers.com/farm-tractor-2-pack-assembled-green . And Walthers would never miss this top seller: https://www.walthers.com/thomas-friends-tm-accessories-terence-the-tractor Yours Aye, Garth Groff 🦆

Re: FARMALL TRACTOR DECALS
John Deere builds combines, planters and tillage equipment,
etc. in the Illinois Quad Cities (home town). But John Deere's main
tractor plant was in Waterloo, Iowa.
International Harvester built the Farmall tractors in Rock
Island and its combines at East Moline, both plants sat literally on the borders
of those towns with Moline, the home of Deere.
Go figure. My sister put in more than 40 years with
Deere and Company and I had 37 with IH (and its successor
companies.)

You’re partly off the hook, Todd. Most resin kits don’t end up with operating doors so no interior decals required, but we need to speak to you about those trucks and the markings on the air reservoirs . . .

I believe they are the Life Like Red farm tractors. They are very similar to the Farmall Tractors, but you would have to paint and decal them. They are listed on Ebay in sets of three per package. Al Smith Sonora CA

That sounds like the old Rock Island Plow Co.plant in Rock Island Ill., Allen. Frank Hodina would probably know for sure. My Grandfather worked there before coming back east. It was sold to John Deere in the late 1890's I believe. I have had family in the area since my g-g-grandfather moved the family to Rock Island Co, in 1835 when it was said there were less than 100 white people in the area. Cordially, Don Valentine

Broadway Limited Tank cars

has anyone attempted to replace the "wood" walkways on Broadway Limited tank cars with "metal" walkways?
And would this modification be appropriate for tank cars in the early to mid 1950's or were wood walk ways still in use? Allen Cain

The second car is a CN 504xxx series car (I can’t quite make out the number), also built by Canadian Car & Foundry, but in 1929 (the so-called CNR 1929 Standard Boxcar — very common, with some 9600 cars built from 1929-1931). This was a slightly longer (40’6” vs 36’) and slightly higher inside (8’7” vs 8’) – although the increased height does not seem obvious in this photo. A looong time ago, when I was still working, EMD used old box cars as mobile warehouses and these kind of floated around the plant as needed. I do not remember the exterior reporting marks…some secondhand outfit or other…but inside the doors they were marked in the L&N 96xxx series IIRC. I did not have the freight knowledge I have now but I now recognize them as double sheathed rebuilds. They caught my attention because I thought them neat and unusual. I was very pleased when Sunshine offered them many years later.

Good point . . . and I've found this very useful when determining the heritage of a "repurposed" car. Attached photo shows what was probably the last surviving Ann Arbor 74000-series boxcar. It was being used as a storage shed in the city DPW yard in Cadillac Michigan. The original car number was stenciled on the inside above the door opening. STMFC trivia: this car was THE prototype for the Speedwitch resin kit. Ted Culotta borrowed the drawings that Arnt Gerritsen made from our measurements and photos taken that day. A quick glance and that second boxcar over from the Canadian National appeared for an instant to be a G &D boxcar. Of course on closer look it's C&O.
