B&O P-25D in HO

Attached is a low-rez photo of an Intermountain 70-ton AAR bulkhead flat I modified to represent a B&O P-25D.  The car represents 1 of 50 built at B&O’s Dubois PA shops in 1959 wearing stenciling that’s about a year later than the 6-61 reweigh date. 

 

A light application of Turpenoid and black, oil-based powder, was brushed on the laser-cut deck and ends as a base coat.  All subsequent weathering to the deck, sides and ends was done with MANY layers of powders ranging from red to orange to dark grey.

A problem is that research libraries are not necessarily archives. And if you think the disposal of interesting railroad related material is recent, I’ll tell you about my first summer job in high school in 1965. I dusted all the books in the U Conn law library. In there there were Connecticut Railroad Commission reports from the 1870s to the1920s; beautifully bound, printed in four colors and with exquisite fold-out maps. Later that summer I found them in a dumpster out back. Why I didn’t take them home I don’t know, but they went to the dump.

California's Cal Poly University (San Luis Obispo) about 4 years ago decided that a paper library was unwanted in this digital age. With a collection of 1000's of technical publications, it took weeks to dumpster the paper. I have a friend who worked at the university who saved some stuff but the majority went to the land fill. I probably don't need to say what I feel about this policy. Lots of RR subjects.

    More likely a USRA clone from the mid-1920's constructed with 7 over 8 rib ends that was
rebuilt in the 1930's with a 3 rib extension added to the top to increase the cubic capacity.

These cars appear to be improved versions of the old AHM/Tyco/Model Power 50' flats (not 52'6"). Same side configuration, same number of stake pockets, same length. Detail on the sides seems to be somewhat better, and there are endsills and buffers, which were lacking on the old model. That is a vast improvement. The underframe and brake system are completely different and IMHO somewhat imaginary, though maybe there are Chinese or other cars with brake systems like that.. 

The Roco cars Tony refers to are longer. They essentially are stretched versions of the 50" (not 52'6") flats. The Roco flats are good starting points for the US Army 6-axle flats, as Tony has pointed out elsewhere. The 50' flats have no prototype that I am aware of. 

So my bottom line, at least for now, is they are better versions of a car with no prototype.
