ADMIN - let's focus on Freight Cars
Aley, Jeff A
Hi Folks,
Gentle reminder – this is the (real) Steam-Era Freight Cars list. It’s a place where we talk about Steam-Era Freight Cars (thank you, Captain Obvious!). Recently we’ve strayed into some specific modeling techniques (cutting styrene strips, unclogging glue bottles), which are related to STMFC’s. But we’ve also strayed farther afield into magazine archives, DCC sound, and the politics of a particular club.
Let’s be self-policing and try to confine ourselves to the topic of Steam-Era Freight Cars.
Thanks,
-Jeff Aley Deputy Moderator, RealSTMFC

Donald yes it can, just my way of doing it as the dental pick is much stiffer than a pin or needle. And, when you have a good number supplied by my dentist ( years back), as Bill mentioned, you look for ways to use them.

I like Tony Thompson's approach. He publishes in the magazines, and then refers to the articles, corrects them, summarizes them, or expands on them in his blog. Richard Townsend

I know Otto well. He’s open to articles. I’ve pitched a few and the only thing holding me up is I can’t take pictures at the model RR club since the landlord locked it down.
They can only publish what they have.
One thing I noticed in the past few years Is that a lot of modelers have taken to publishing their own blogs with great content, so stuff that used to end up in a magazine is put online by the owner

A builder’s photo for sure. Did that car get painted another color when it went into service? And that color would have been . . .??

Agreed. I've got more dental picks of more kinds than I can begin to describe.
Also, your doctor can be a source of tools. In some circumstances they just throw away tools rather than go to the cost of sterilizing them. I've gotten hemostats, forceps, and scissors that way. Their quality isn't high but for most procedures they get the job done. I just ask if they're throwing the instruments away. If they are they give them to me. My dermatologist is great for this. I suspect they believe I'm using the hemostats for, um, off-label uses, but they make great clamps. Richard Townsend

Can this not be done with a ladies common sewing pin or a needle with the one end pushed into a cork for grip? Cordially, Don Valentine

Bill is correct, just ask you dentist. I asked my dentist and he gave me a hand full of various picks he no longer used. I was afraid to ask how he managed to break the ends off
of a couple of them.
You can grind the broken tips into specific shapes that meet your needs. While waiting for a crown which my dentist makes "while you wait" I got to see the machine that does this. Looks like "rapid prototyping" to me. I had a lot to think about during the remainder of my visit.

I have long found it ironic that the slippery plastic used for CA tips seems to be the only slippery plastic CA will adhere to.

Schuyler and all,
RMC has some 1950's material, several articles, some even requested by former editor Stephen Priest. It appears to me the magazine has gone in a different direction. That being said I suppose it is hard for Otto to know about all of the prior submissions
submitted to RMC under the previous regime.

Perhaps he’s pushing for more contemporary modeling coverage. I know the new editor got a lot of reader blow-back when he took the back and forth between Mike and Bill, the “Look Both Ways” column, and pushed it to the back of the magazine, and I think shortened it quite a bit. I preferred the previous format and always enjoyed reading their differing approaches or opinions.

I scan the few articles of interest from MR and RMC so I can search them on the hard drive using keywords. The problem with that is that as interests and needs change, I have to go back through the magazines to find the newly relevant material. I was hoping the ten year archive would facilitate that search. Content for my areas of interest has really slipped in both magazines – MR is to basic and RMC is moving past my cutoff era for most content. The latest MR is pretty thin. I’m debating with myself about letting my subscription expire.

I'm a Loksound user so I went rummaging thru the various European sound files until I found one that I liked...that didn't have modern inverter whine etc. I used the Lokprogrammer software to add an American horn and bell to the sound file, hid the German conductor and station announcements, and loaded it to the decoder. The model runs much much better and sounds pretty good too. Craig Zeni Cary NC

Many have found the nozzle does close on some of the super glues as once in a while on the Zap I use. I would like to share a tool I made to clear the nozzle. It is a dental pick with a straightened end. The dental pick came from one of the tool venders at a train show. Works great for me without ruining nozzle.
