The coupler is there, but the knuckle is laying on the ground below it.
This rig seems to be using the knuckle pin as a fixed pivot point.  With 
that hefty jack for power, I can see making metal move.

the straight arms have a chain and what looks like a hoist, so with that and the missing coupler I would say that's how they are changing out the coupler without having to lift by hand.

I am finishing up on a PS-1 build. The kit is by Intermountain. I think that is the finest PS-1 I have ever built. My only beef is that the right side ladder/stirrup piece is weak whete the stirrup meets the ladder. I replaced it with an A-Line part. It's missing the second rung, I know, but it's a VGN car . Not one of the primary roads for me. If Pierre has an etching to replace that, I'll fix it later.

No, I have some of the Walthers kits, in the white and blue boxes, from the early 1990s. I recall the Walthers catalogs and model magazines at the time featured color ads of those kits, and also the re-tooled AHM 40 ft gondolas.

AHM also produced a plug door version, originally with separate ladders and later with molded-on ladders.  I believe Con Cor eventually ended up with this model, as well as the sliding door car. 

Seems that the plug door shell with the separate ladders would be a decent starting point to model the relatively few prototypes...Chicago Great Western, I think, and a few others...I do have a photo of an Illinois Central one too.

     Nice remark, Andy. Can't remember if I ever owned (or kept, if owned) any of those brands, but hey, fun is fun. My only comment of substance, Andy, is that it took really close-up photos to show the "defects" you described. I am reminded of my old friend in Pittsburgh, Byron Rose, for whom all defects, no matter how tiny, are equally serious.

We all know of this often quoted phrase, which has almost become trite. What does it mean in this instance? That the CB&T car is "pretty good"? STMFC has been described as a forum dedicated to building better models of freight cars. Doing quality work on a flawed model encourages mediocrity.  No where do I wish to imply that I am an elete modeler, I just feel that some things need to join the Athearn BB box cars, and CB&T is one of those products.

I have suggested two methods of building a better 12-panel box car. Maybe we should just abandon this site and all move over to the Model Railroad Hobbyist, a free online site which its forum is reflective of the mediocrity from the mag itself. (The mag does have a few jewels from time-to-time, I admit, but how much crap is required to wade through for those rare jewels?)

So Tony, blog away your AHM, Tyco and Bachmann toy train stuff, cause we don't want the perfect to be the enemy of good.

Historically speaking and being parsimonious -

It has been the custom for all time to paint the trucks black.  This necessitated the changing of pots and brushes when the painting of the body was finished and work commenced on the trucks.  The company [i.e. CB&Q] is commencing now to paint the trucks the same color as the body of the car.  This appears to be a small matter, but in the course of a year the time saved in changing, and the cost of extra pots, brushes, etc. dispensed with, amounts to a very considerable little sum.

Reading between the lines of the Burlington Route Historical Society's Burlington Bulletin No. 7, on the Burlington's XM-32 boxcars (including the FW&D and C&S cars) and which describes one-stop painting, and which does not mention any change in colors while painting, I would hazard a guess that it was all the same color.

I have been working on renumbering some Intermountain 1958 cuft covered hoppers.  These are the grey SHPX leased to CB&Q cars with stock number 48605.  I was able to scan the car sides and redraw the numbers in Corel Draw to use as decal artwork for personal uses only.  The file has the 0-9 numbers in both the car side and car end sizes matched to the existing lettering.
