Re: National C-1trucks
Ed Hawkins
Brian, The trucks tooled by InterMountain for the ACF 70-ton covered hoppers are not National C-1. They are a relatively uncommon 70-ton AAR spring-plank design that I’ve only seen on L&N and NC&StL cars of this type built by ACF in 1943. Photos of these cars were published in RP CYC Volume 27. Regards, Ed Hawkins

National C-1trucks
According to the HO truck guide put together by Richard Hendrickson, Intermountain has a 70 ton National C-1 truck. They don’t list this as a separate model on their website but I think it is what the provide with the ACF 1958 CF covered hoppers. They do list a Barber70 ton truck part 40063 but no pictures. I’m wondering if it is the correct truck mid-labeled? (I trust Richard’s doc more than IM.) Does anyone know?
Are there other sources of National C-1 trucks? I’m in need of a few pair for projects. Thanks. Brian J. Carlson

The original color? From the as-built appearance in the Teens? I doubt that.

Let’s be careful with general statements. That’s how hobby myths are created, like all PRR freight cars are Tuscan Red. It takes little extra effort to include a timeframe with a question or an answer. This list is a resource. Include accurate details. Not all the list members model the years when steam died. That's true Dennis but it's darn close to the original color that it was repainted with. I used to pass that car several times each Sat. and Sun while working for the Green Mountain Rwy. and/or Steamtown when serving as either the Relief Passenger Trainman or the Relief Fireman for the Riverside to Chester turn three times per day. Rich Christie's suggestion is really of the wall as the cherry red was used only on cabeese and darn few of them at that! I will check to see.which Accu-Paint color I have used on my Rutland boxcars tomorrow and advise further. My best, Don Valentine

How about using a 3D printer process to deliver paint thru a small bore needle ?

Re: Photo: Stenciling Freshly Painted NKP Box Car 27676
Almost anything can be done if you throw enough money and time into it. Getting paint to behave in those tight spaces would be the second challenge. I suspect you would have to really hate decals to go the stencil method. Doing your own pad printing might be cheaper and easier. Chuck Peck

That's not the in-service paint... you can see the parts that haven't been repainted are totally devoid of any paint. So, somebody painted it with what they had, no guarantee of a match, and only repainted the big lettering. Dennis Storzek

Bill, From what I have read on some of the Rutland sites, including RPI (NEB&W), they were painted Rutland Cherry Red, which is 50% Box Car Red and 50% Caboose Red Rich Christie

Could the Fox trucks just be shop trucks?
They were pretty much gone by 1946, and were not being used in new construction. -Hudson

Hopper Car Photo
David
Whose car is this, and why is at the ACF plant in 1946 (repairs, scrapping, modernizing)?I would guess it is a in-plant car purchased secondhand from some dealer. The car doesn't have a pressed or fabricated end sill reinforcement, so it is likely from the 1903-early '04 production groups: LV 21001-21100 P&R 81000-81499 CNJ 49500-49999 DL&W 73000-73499 JC&C 101-600 (to B&O 233000-233499) DL&W 74000-74499 maybe Michigan Alkali 793-825 David Thompson
