Didn't realize K4 had its own web page...here it is  https://k4decals.com/

I have used some of their alphabet decals recently, and I'm pleased with the result though it's not challenging-- white decals on a black wall.  It's also not on a freight car so I'm stretching a bit...

Bruce Griffin courteously provided the link to the MRH color matching guide:

The link to the MRH Guide is https://www.testors.com/~/media/DigitalEncyclopedia/Documents/Testors/ebook/MRH-Acrylic-painting-guide-post-Floquil-Portrait.ashx

Considering that Testors/Rustoleum recently announced more discontinuances of their model-focused paints (no comment!) I wonder how long this document will remain on their domain.  A download of this guide should be easy.  I'd recommend it.

list prices for Athearn parts are nuts now - but there are still dealers out there who
will give you deep discounts like 30% off

Re: SHPX 161, a two compartment tank car

The 1970 tariff book shows sister car #160 3936 gallons + 5931 gallons (total 9867) with each dome @ 124 gallons.

Hi List Members,

Nice image of SHPX 161, a two compartment tank car.

I suspect this car may have been built originally as a three compartment car, based simply on the location of the two domes. Can anyone confirm (or deny) this to be the case?

The car looks o have a 1930 build date on it, on the right hand side of the tank

Enjoy!

Milwaukee Road Boxcars 35000 and 35044

Lester Breuer

After a resin stock car build, I wanted an easier build. A couple of InterMountain Milwaukee Road boxcars were the solution. If you are interested in the build of MILW boxcars 35044 and 35000 including changes and addition of parts not in the kit. Photos and writeup of the build process including paint and weathering are now available on my blog I have to share photos and writeup of modeling projects on my Minneapolis & Northland Railroad Company. If you would like to take a look please do at the following link:

I agree with you, Bill, I was only providing a lower cost alternative. I tried Kadee, but didn’t like them, and Kadee wheel sets leave much to be desired. I never use them.

What kind of roof is that?  It looks kind of like it has two raised parts for each section.  Diagonal panel perhaps?

This one's really interesting.  The side ladder appears to have collapsed.  But what's even more interesting is the, for lack of a better word, 'interim' dome platform, not a full level platform with railings but more than just side platforms.

As for the shipper, the chemistry is a little out of my reach -- is corn syrup a product or an an ingredient?

Walthers and Kadee also make them. I’ve used Walthers.

Some of the first troop sleepers acquired by the C&O were used as cabooses before being converted to camp cars. These can be easily distinguished by the presence of a radial caboose handrail next to the door.

Friends,

Here's a collection of C&O's ex-Pullman troop sleepers in MW service. Not exactly freight cars, but IIRC we agreed MW cars counted. The Allied Full Cushion truck appears to be from a different car than any pictured here.

IIRC, some of these cars were used by the C&O for express or mail storage. 910239 is probably one of these, and hey!, it's a boxcar (of sorts). Note that the numbers on this car, 911150 and 911153 are in white. So much for system standards.

Yours Aye,

One last view, this is GATX 26452 leased to Anheuser Busch for corn syrup. Car is at Taylor Yard in Los Angeles in September 1958.

Ah yes, corn syrup, a familiar ingredient in A-B brewing products . . .

I am looking for prototype photos of any of the refrigerator cars owned by the California Dispatch Line and used as wine tank cars, that formerly were PFE R-30-5 cars. I am particularly interested in the roofs of these cars. I have seen the photos in the PFE book.

Attached is a National Malleable and Steel Castings Co. ad from the Aug. 30, 1941 Railway Age, showing both their B and B-1 trucks.  A noticeable difference between the two are the bolster ends.  Also the springs on the earlier  B truck were larger diameter than usual and as the capacity increased so did their diameters, but the wheelbase stayed the same.

P2K/Walthers offers the B truck, while Athearn and Kadee sell the B-1 truck.

This afternoon I tried downloading this scan into both Files and Photos, but neither would accept new additions.  If interest in seeing it, just contact me off-list at brianleppert at att dot net.
