Re: New file uploaded to main@RealSTMFC.groups.io
James Brewer
All, There is some confusion as to the file that was uploaded to RealSTMFC. I attempted to upload this file to the group's files at the same time it was uploaded to the files of the Plastic Freight Car Modelers and the Resin Freight Car Modelers; however, there was no space available so I forwarded the file to the list owners. In the meantime, some of you have sent me corrections/additions to the original file that was posted; I have made these corrections/additions to a revised file that I anticipate posting at the beginning of July. Within the past few days Jeff Aley kindly uploaded the original file; this file will be updated with the corrections/additions already forwarded, as well as any others that I receive in a timely manner. Just this morning I received some additional information for DL&W and Erie. So please, keep the corrections/additions coming and I will get them in the revised file. Jim Brewer Glenwood MD

Eric;
I periodically go in to the Pitt Digital library to see new stuff, or do research, and these showed up in the Pittsburgh City Photographer collection. Most of it is street work, paving and such, but some have freight cars peripheral to the subject.
That’s very true. I don’t know why they are uncommon. It’s not like there weren’t thousands wandering around out there.

Eldon,
I had not seen these images! Thank you for sharing. Are they on the Historic Pittsburgh site?
A Pennsy X26 is featured in one of those images and it looks like it is wearing the original lettering. I have seen very few in-service images of these cars in original lettering.

Eldon,
I think the MC car is on B&O tracks, formerly Pittsburgh Junction. They served a couple places under the Duquesne Way viaduct down to 9th Street.

Take a good look at that GS gondola. Note the vertical brake staff location. Now look to the other end of the car and there's a second brake wheel sticking above the end.
The photo has a November 1913 date. As the GRa has a NEW 1913 stencil, the photo date is in the ballpark.

Eric;
Some call it Duquesne Yard, others, Duquesne Way Yard, or others, 11th St Yard (it isn’t). At times, the PRR did not name it as a specific yard, just tracks serving Duquesne Freight Station. Like 23rd St Freight Station had tracks, but PRR did not call them 23rd St Yard, so what do you call the yard?
Here are some more of Carson St Freight Station yard tracks.
Had you seen these?

There are a couple fresh-looking X23 boxcars, too.
I didn't know the freight facilities at the Point in Pittsburgh was known as Duquesne yard.

Good eyes!
That entire area was leveled during the revitalization of the “Point” area of downtown Pittsburgh.
There are many photos of this area and its connections into the Produce Yard, in the Historic Pittsburgh collection. Look for “Duquesne Way”, or “Railroad Avenue”.
The freight station was more oriented around non-perishable freight, which we see represented in these cars.

Sheathing on resin kits
Andy Carlson
For many decades I have been quite outspoken in lobbying for less aggressive model freight car wood siding gaps in the Single and Double Sheathed car sides. Our very own Brian Leppert, who was the tool maker for the HO MDC 50' SS auto box car back in the Carson City days of Roundhouse, tells how he was instructed to make the car side's grooves "very noticeable", which Brian dutifully followed. I know a very nice guy who is a major contributor to resin car production whom years ago was unapologetic in sticking to Evergreen factory scribed siding for the house car sides being made back then. In the years following he now makes some of the best siding for HO freight cars and he is justifillably proud of those results. I show some examples of DS sides, both real and model. This is probably the latest DS tooling in HO. Model Single sheathed cars have seen huge improvements in the last few decades, but I would like to see even further gains. Even in a tired and old SS car, the wood siding does not grow excessively apart. This was called to our attention last week in the STMFC and though extreme, it isn't excessive. This SS side was a quite common condition for SS car sides and you will notice some areas the joints are missing to view. Fresh paint on an older car and yet the boards still fit close together. I am certainly glad to see movement towards nicer boards on our wood sided cars. Let us not stop yet. Thanks, -Andy Carlson, Ojai CA Well Eric, I talked with one of these resin makers not too terribly long ago (certainly more recently than 10 years ago) at CCB and this person told me that if you can't see the boards from more than several feet, people don't purchase them. Admittedly neither this person or their firm was at CCB or Chicagoland this last year so there may have been some incremental progress, however that is what I am talking about. We seem to be in conflict here with my first hand conversation and your first hand perceptions. Jim Dick - St. Paul, MN
