    Lead is significantly denser than brass. Titanium is rather less dense than either. I agree with Ben that lead is an excellent choice, especially in sheet form. You can readily buy this from roofers' supply stores (sometimes plumbers also) even if your local Big Box no longer carries it. And an advantage of lead is that it is so soft, you can readily "forge" pieces to fit where they need to go in an under frame. You barely need a hammer.
     There have occasionally been outbreaks of hysteria about the health dangers of lead. Well, lead in metallic form is not dangerous. It does have lead oxide on its surface, so do wash your hands after handling it, but beyond that, not to worry.

It's a rebuild. In the mid-1920s, after USRA control, the NKP began a rebuilding program for a lot of their older boxcars and gondolas. Most got steel center sills, and a few thousand older boxcars got a variety of steel ends (I've counted seven different types). I've seen at least one other photo of one of the ex-Clover Leaf Fowlers with Dreadnaught ends, but they were by no means common.

Charlie,
I built his NP flat from a few years ago. I used sheet lead from my old bathroom stack on the roof. I used a divider to measure the cells on the underside of the car and with T-Square and triangle copied the dimensions to the flattened sheet and scored with a stanley knife. I used Aileens Gold craft glue to secure the weight. Also did this to my CB&Q Mini-kit Flat. All 3 track great as empties. Accurail trucks with IM wheelsets.

I use the fibre reinforced wheels. They are less prone to shattering. Menards might have them, O'Reilly Auto part has them and I used to buy them from my LHS.

The junk is there as a materials yard. Work has just begun on a new bridge to connect the north shore of the Allegheny River with the Point in Pittsburgh. The bridge would be named the Manchester Bridge and is the dividing point where the Allegheny becomes the Ohio River.

 

The tracks here are also part of the BR&P southern freight terminal on the B&O Allegheny Yard branch. This is a small, shared yard with the B&O, the School Street Yard. The BR&P has a couple of team tracks back there and shared loco facilities are behind the photographer to the right. Beyond the new bridge construction is the B&O Smokey Island yard which was a larger classification yard. I feel the School Street yard was mainly for arrivals and departures from other B&O yards in the region.

 

This link takes you to the Historic Pittsburgh map that overlays 1923 Hopkins plat maps on the area. You should land close to the point or in the Allegheny River.

New boxcars for sale

Some new wood, double sheathed, boxcars have arrived this week.

First is the Northern Pacific, wood sidded boxcars, with radial roofs and lever brake "wheels". they come in 4 paint schemes.

As built 1923, the 1940 version with red ends, the 1945 version with black ends and the 1951 version with "Main Street" slogan. The builder is Rapido and this is the second run of these cars. I do have a handfull of cars from the first run for those needing more numbers.

Also the Rapido USRA double sheathed box cars have arrived. Have GN, MP, PM, Wabash and B&M.

The BR&P wood gondola looks like it is well cared for and still in very good condition.
 
The Sandy Valley and Elkhorn steel gondola looks like it just came from the factory a week ago! Sadly, I can only read “CSCo 7-“ as the builders info – the year is not visible.

Scratch that answer….my answer applies to double doors and very wide singles, not offset doors per se.  Some single door cars had offset doors as well, likely to accommodate threading long items into the car.

The run-by at 7:20 has 3 of the distinctive large C&IM coal gondolas. I don't doubt that these cars would have been in interchange, but I personally only saw them in home-road coal drag service. What could have been the reason(s) for just a few of them running on other roads?

To add - I don't like using the traditional kit-provided steel weights for light open cars, especially if you are using under track uncoupling magnets or the Rix uncoupling tool, as the magnets will "grab" the cars.
