Well I have to say that I find this all very interesting and hope it continues! While not necessarily about prototypical models of steam era freight cars, it is about where we started (and the individuals involved) and that is how we got to the accurate (more or less) that we have today. Those early models, why they may fail to meet the current standards, if it hadn't been for them, and everyone relied upon models similar to O and S Scale tinplate models, I would imagine that we would not have made the progress that we have made.
It's always nice to learn about the past, so one of my favorite columns is Collectors Consist in RMC. Naturally, YMMV . . . Take Care,

What’s sold under that generic name is any blend of acetone or other ketones, alcohols (many different), petroleum distillates like toluene, acetates, ethers, plus who knows what. Every brand is DIFFERENT. Some “lacquer thinners” curdle some lacquers causing the entire mess to turn to Jello. Their relative effects on various model paints is anyone’s guess. Many lacquer thinners will violently attack some plastics like styrene. USE CARE, and experiment first on some hidden or unimportant area. Dan Mitchell ==========

No, actually this is a 10'0" IH car. which is why Steve Hoxie's model has to cover the door opening discrepancies with the door partially ajar. The Intermountain 12-panel is a 6' wide door design. -Andy Carlson Ojai CA

I was excited to get one of the PFE R-30-18 models this spring, but the excitement was tempered when many noted the strange way the brake components were assembled. After some discussions with Dick Harley and others, I documented my changes in a short presentation that is attached.

I learned the hard way just last evening that lacquer thinner will remove the Tangent lettering almost immediately with little effect on the bae paint color.
