Re: Train-Master vs. Train-Miniature
Brian Termunde
Well I have to say that I find this all very interesting and hope it continues! While not necessarily about prototypical models of steam era freight cars, it is about where we started (and the individuals involved) and that is how we got to the accurate (more or less) that we have today. Those early models, why they may fail to meet the current standards, if it hadn't been for them, and everyone relied upon models similar to O and S Scale tinplate models, I would imagine that we would not have made the progress that we have made.
It's always nice to learn about the past, so one of my favorite columns is Collectors Consist in RMC. Naturally, YMMV . . . Take Care,

Re: Tangent Tank Car Paint Removal
Just one word of warning … There’s no such chemical as “Lacquer Thinner”.
toggle quoted message
Show quoted text
What’s sold under that generic name is any blend of acetone or other ketones, alcohols (many different), petroleum distillates like toluene, acetates, ethers, plus who knows what. Every brand is DIFFERENT. Some “lacquer thinners” curdle some lacquers causing the entire mess to turn to Jello. Their relative effects on various model paints is anyone’s guess. Many lacquer thinners will violently attack some plastics like styrene. USE CARE, and experiment first on some hidden or unimportant area. Dan Mitchell ==========

A 2004 article in the Billings Gazette, about the then-impending demise of Champion, included this history:
"He bought the Champion company in 1963 from Max Gray, who had moved it to California after starting it in Ohio in 1940." The full article is well worth reading: https://billingsgazette.com/business/end-of-line-near-for-model-decal-company/article_ce5c4878-6511-54b2-9940-d43d64960f45.html I seem to remember having packs of older Champ decals with a California address. Probably still have some around somewhere. Jack Mullen |

I really appreciate this string. It’s not exactly what we ‘should’ talk about, but it’s fascinating history. It will be lost if not put out before it’s lost. I appreciate your patience. Is there even a ‘History of the American Model Railroad Industry’ web site? Bill S

Boy, this is embarrassing! I quickly responded to the D&LW car question and made my reply directed instead at the EJ&E car (which is a 10'0" car) by error. The Lackawanna car is certainly a 10'6" car. Sorry for the error. -Andy Carlson Ojai CA _._,_._,_

No, actually this is a 10'0" IH car. which is why Steve Hoxie's model has to cover the door opening discrepancies with the door partially ajar. The Intermountain 12-panel is a 6' wide door design. -Andy Carlson Ojai CA

I was excited to get one of the PFE R-30-18 models this spring, but the excitement was tempered when many noted the strange way the brake components were assembled. After some discussions with Dick Harley and others, I documented my changes in a short presentation that is attached.
Be sure to check out Dick’s updated web pages on PFE reefers. He has added a lot to his site at he pondered these cars.

First off, if this is the wrong list for this please let me know and any suggestions for another list woU\Uld be appreciated.
I am seeking advice on the removal of the paint/ink that Tangent Scale Models applies to their GATX 1948+ tank cars and their Cosden 3 Dome tank cars.
Bought some ICG Decals and plan to strip and renumber them.
Thanks,
