Nice . . . photos in the "original" paint scheme are fairly rare.  Not long after this 1956 date the DT&I began painting its cars in the scheme with the compass herald and "We have the CONNECTIONS" slogan.  The weathering is interesting too.  The DT&I shipped a lot of (bagged) clay out of Ohio and this car certainly looks like it might have been in this service.

I keep running into a difficulty of the draft gear box wanting to rotate if the screw isn’t really TIGHT, which can be obviated by making sure there is a continuous contact between the back end of the box and the center sill, or, of course, by some adhesive.  I really prefer the very flat headed screws I mentioned before as it reduces the side profile of the screw head.  They look something like this:

But have an even flatter head

When I got the dozens I have, they were only available with the slotted head.  I see now that there are some which are cross-headed screws.

It is exactly for this reason that I prefer brass screws - they are relatively easy to cut to a custom length (much easier than steel screws), but since they are metal they are stronger than plastic screws

I use the Kadee screws for cases (hoppers and flats) where the length of the screw causes it to emerge
and become visible - or if it interferes with something inside the car, like a weight. I install it, and then cut it
off flush. If you're snapping them, you're over tightening them. Use a tiny drop of Loctite if you're worried
about them coming out.

Slot or Phillips is irrelevant - why use plastic screws if electrical shorts are not an issue?  Use metal screws instead.

I thought perhaps they changed from yellow to red when they changed from Atlantic Coast Despatch to Atlantic Coast Line on the cars, but I've got color pictures of ACD cars in yellow and red.  Also, could find no mention of the color change in any of my books on ACL.

So true, Tim. Unfortunately. And don't forget the destruction of habitat and the impact to the fauna before the excessive and thoughtless one-time usage of the wood (and other things). Usually this has always been glorified to civilization out of the wilderness...
A worldwide problem, and still current.
 
By all the greatness and fascination of the steam train era and lots of other technical things at that time - this was also the era because of which words like ecology or environmental protection have been invented.

It's too horrible to contemplate how much fabulous old growth timber was wantonly destroyed. Ugh.

Think of all the old retired freight cars that were simply BURNED in the open to recover the steel.
Millions of freight cars! Compare to the recovery of salt-infused timber from the SP's Salt Lake trestle
that was sold for its beauty in the 1980's or 1990's.

The car is one of 300 ventilated boxcars listed by the New Orleans Great Northern Railway (NOGN) in the June 1909 ORER. The listing on page 207 features a triangular emblem similar to that on the freight car.

I think that we are looking at a retrofit. The diagonal brace, which in my experience can run either way, depending on the car and road, appears to have been applied over (or really under) the stringer. Normally, there are either diagonals, OR stringers between the bolster and the end sill, not both. For example, the PRR X31 was built with the diagonal, but when the single stringer was replaced with double stringers, the diagonal brace was removed and the stringers ran to the end of the car.

Well, I agree that it’s not tight to the floor above it, but . . . it’s also appearing to be bent, and on a wrecked car, I’d be cautious about generalizing from the condition of this particular diagonal to say that all diagonals on PFE reefers are the same.  Once bent, that channel has lost a good bit of its integrity.

This photo can be enlarged quite a bit.

The nearest reefer appears to be PFE 9544. That would make it an R-30-5 reefer, one of 3,021 cars (series 7101-10121) built in 1909-1911 by Pullman.

Notice this car has a single grab iron on the near end side. With regard to safety appliances, interchange rules required an additional grab iron on house cars, hopper cars, and high side gondola cars built new or rebuilt on or after August 1, 1933.

Notice how some of the siding has been stripped from the sides of the cars.

UTLX had a business relationship with Graver Tank and Manufacturing that led to it purchasing Graver in 1957.  The underframes and tanks were assembled at the UTLX facility in Whiting, Indiana.

NKP 50ft double door box cars some with Viking roofs questions

I have searched in vain for my copy of the MM issue in which Bob Hundman outlined the NKP all-steel 50-foot double door box cars, in two series, one of which had Viking roofs.

 

Does anyone on the list know much about these cars?  Were they built for automobile or auto parts service?  I know NKP had plants on-line.

 

They look unique in several ways.  Did some have racks?  Were some or all originally “Damage Free” cars, or did that come later?

 

Do you know anything about the cars that went to P&WV?  They appear to have stenciling that would indicate as assignment.  Any idea to whom?  See attached.

I have seen photos that were definitely not white, but with black lettering that said Borden's Milk I suspect the silver was a transitional scheme as the cars moved towards the chemical division.

I think the aluminum painted cars were for the Chemical Division - I think this was the final paint scheme.

I am modeling some milk container cars on the flat cars owned by National Car Company that the DL&W used to carry in their milk trains in the early 1950’s. Funaro and Camerlengo (F&C) has produced these cars in HO as resin kits. In the process of painting the kits, the question is what color are the containers and what were they lettered.

In a review of the kits in RMC in the July 1989 issue written by Rusty Recordon, he indicated that the in the 1950’s era, the containers were very weathered, without any lettering and appeared to be a Pullman green color based on his viewing some color movies from the period. I have be unable to locate any color photos of these cars and there are few black and white images available.

The Lackawanna served several dairies in the period including Dairymen’s League, Sheffield and Borden’s. According to the F&C instructions, the Dairymen’s League, Sheffield and Borden’s containers were all white with black lettering, though even in the few black and white images I have found, the Borden’s containers don’t appear white, but something much darker in shade – perhaps very weathered white?

If anyone has better information on this topic, I would appreciate it. I have posted a photo from the F&C website of the Borden’s containers as a reference.

Turns it green, for one. It's a preservative treatment so it has many of the same uses as creosote but the chemistry is different.  For more info, do a search on "chromated copper arsenate."
