Layout tour
Steve SANDIFER
Every year the San Jacinto Model Railroad Club has November Open Houses – but Covid…. So we are virtual this year. You can view some of our Houston layouts at http://sanjacmodeltrains.org/Fall-Layout-Tour.html . Some layouts are just beginning, some are virtually complete. For this group that likes scratch building, look at Barry Bogs F scale layout – virtually every loco and car is scratchbuilt along with structures. If you like detailed scenery – Cliff Cheeseman’s is hard to beat. Gil Freitag was one of the first to initiate operations in Houston, and his layout has been featured in MR 3-4 times. My layout is in the group as well.

Stephen I don’t want to guess; can you provide the 6-8 most common Santa Fe scales for light weights? Charlie

I’ve been kicking around an idea with Hubert Mask on having a decal set made with the most common weight locations by railroad. I have a comprehensive list of Mopac locations but would need help with the other railroads. I told Hubert I’d be happy to compile a list if the group members would send me the top six or eight locations. Obviously I don’t want the full name but the ‘short name’ the railroad used in there stencil. As example for the MP Kingsville was KV, Alexandria was ALEX. The decal sheet would be alphabetized by railroad so if you are wanting to restenciled a ATSF boxcar it would be easy to find. He’ll also include a set of light weights. So the .io list isn’t filled with responses to this topic you can send your railroad name and weigh locations to me (omahaduck (at) gmail (dot) com)

Yes, this was Buffalo & Susquehanna's typical steel gondola. Original series were 10001-11250 and 11601-12600, built by Pressed Steel Car in 1905-07; these were about half of the total B&S fleet in 1919.

Re: Decals for scale locations and light weights
Hubert The Union Pacific needs white, black, red and yellow reweigh shop stencils, lube stencils, freight car classes, built dates, and actual load limit and light weight stencils both pre-1963 and post-1963!! (Gross Rail Load values increased for all freight cars in 1963 and every car had to be reweighed and restenciled) I'm just sayin' :-) But I'd be very interested in the above. And there are other roads that need multiple colors too. And you could figure out how to compile all that on a sheet for one major railroad (or set of roads) then use that layout as a 'template' for other roads. In my opinion you can cover a lot of territory with "roman" and "gothic" type because the sizes are so small - 1" 2" 3" so fine distinctions are a lot harder to see and don't matter unless you're building a museum piece. But there are exceptions I'm sure like NYC and PC modern styles etc.

Ed is very correct. I will have to look at each railroads font. Will have to hold it to certain amount of roads.

Need broadside photo of OSL #3029-54 short caboose
#3029-54
wahsatch
I'd like to build a couple models in O to use behind the OSL 4-6-0 I'm accumulating brass for. If the boards are not CS 3.25" [sheet available from Evergreen] then the O scale indexer I'm building using a 8 tpi screw & nut from a car jack could be used.
Thanks for any help.
