Thank you Bruce, for filling in fantastic extra info.

That shows car 43386, the other car listed in the 7-37 ORER, note PPP as exceptions in the 43191 to 43690 series F-50-12 cars with greater capacity.
See my post earlier in this tread.

I tried plugging in to the Huntington Library site and searching for more photos on this installation but found it difficult to navigate.

Are there more photos ?

I came across in my stash a half dozen pair of these. They look better in person, but I can't figure out what they might represent. 5 springs and some big-ass journals, 6"x11", so maybe in the 70 ton range. Only markings is a "2" on the underside of the bolster.
Any thoughts?

One of the clinics during the virtual PRR day meeting was on transformers, by Rob Bennett. One thing I learned from Rob is that there was usually a transformer for each phase. I sent the photo to Rob and he looked around a bit and found this photo:
of not just the two mentioned but THREE transformers... so this was a three-phase installation. These are GE built.

These are two nearly-identical transformers on TWO different SP
70-ton(ish) SP Flat cars:

Photo on 4-8-1937 on SP 43595 F-50-12 ... with what look to be 70-ton
leaf-spring trucks.

Look like different cars to me?

-       Trucks different

-       595 has a stake pocket behind side grabs, 679 not.

-       Side completely flat on 679, looks like it is “stepped”(??) on 575

The question does not have a precise answer because the change would have had to occur over time.  When did Southern executives decide to change the color?  About 1953-4.  When did the last of Southern flat cars with black disappear off the rails?  Probably not till after the merger with the N&W in 1982 (Kinkead book shows black Southern freight cars in Roman lettering in the 70's). New built cars after 1960 at least are going to be Southern freight car red.  Photos are your best friend.

A quick shop change to 70-ton trucks...because an important shipper has a LARGE load: Voila!

SP Freight Cars Vol 3, p 220 lists F-70-1 as a single car: SP 49679...

I wonder if it might have sometimes been that, faced with a large high value shipment like this power plant machinery that the RR might overhaul and paint cars just for that shipment,rather than just grab the first car off the yard track. This would account for the clean appearance of many of the cars in this set of pictures- if they did do this, it would be just the sort of practice that would die off in the Depression and war years

Oops, listing for one 70t car,  49679, listed in the 7-39 ORER.

In the 7-37 ORER,  49679 is listed as a 50t F-50-14 car, the last in that # series.

There are no 70t,  1400000 lbs capacity flats listed in either the 7-37 or 7-39 ORER's for SP.

Tony may need to chime in here but I think SP got it's first 70T flats in 1940, if memory serves and I don't have to rush to find Tony's book.

         There are 2 other notes listing changes in capacity - both from 80000 lbs to 100000 lbs. and from different # series.

From the 7-39 ORER

FM  flat all steel  43191 to 43690                100000 lbs. capacity         495 cars
        There are no notes for special capacity flat cars listed in 7-39 ORER for this # series.

I'm sorry but I don't have any ORER's between these. There may have been a second capacity change on the 2 PPP note cars from 7-37 and a 10-37 or there abouts ORER
might show if that is the case.

I agree with Garth and Bruce.
The leaf-sprung trucks look like they were once under a steam locomotive tender.  Someone at SP must have determined the F-50-12 underframe could handle the transformer's weight.  But why not just use a 70-ton flat car?  Length too long?
