Re: Boiler Load Project
Actually, for other loads I have seen the strapping brought through the stake pocket and up again to the strapping above the pocket with some sort of fastener connecting the two. I'd probably do this next time.

Re: [Non-DoD Source] Re: [RealSTMFC] PRR X47 running board
Gatwood, Elden J SAD
Guys;
I can’t find the correspondence on whose, but they are definitely some kind of rectangular grid.
Link:
Apex or Blawknox, I don’t know.
Given Dec (IIRC) 1953 build, not surprising short-taper IDEs, high tack boards, OH diag panel roof. Note doorway gussets PRR was adding in this timeframe, plus 10” (IIRC) channel side sill.
Don’t know all the brake details (yet).
One of the last cars in CK P&L.

Re: Roma wine cars converted from PFE refers
Jay Styron
I have several of the RC models of these cars. Three that came to hand were: CDLX 294 and 298 for Roma, and a Fruit Industries car No. 313. I have others, also, probably from a years-ago swap meet binge.. These cars do not appear in my 1955 Tank Car Tariff book, so were gone by then. Maybe someone has an earlier tariff that still lists these cars. At least this may point you to the right number series.

Photos appear to show APEX (grid) running boards, although the photos are not definitive.

Re: Soo Line Boxcars
FYI - the DSS&A cars continued to have black ends AND roofs. Jerry Glow made a variety of decals for the DSS&A cars including their interesting slogans. These cars all ended up as part of the Soo Line.

Re: Boiler Load Project
Great model, Bob - well worth the work & frustration.
I do wonder, however, whether the strapping alone would be sufficient to prevent sideways movement of the load? (The Devil made me say it!!) Tom

Roma wine cars converted from PFE refers
David Turner
According to the PFE book by Tony Thompson (page 83), in 1929 100 PFE R-30-5 and -6 cars were changed to steel cast trucks. Then in 1933-35, 41 of them were sold to California Dispatch Line (CDLX 277-317) for conversion to interior tanks for wine service. Several were leased to Roma Wine Co.
Does anyone know what car numbers were leased to Roma Wine Co? Thank you for any assistance, David Turner

Re: Wilson reefers.
ROGER HINMAN
Wilson got started by buying out the Schwarzchild and Sulzberger co fleet just before WW1. Haskel and Barker built a few lots of 34’9inch cars at the same time and very good drawings for these are available at the IRM Library.

My mistake – The dollar sign logo.As someone had already said, ALL the AAR cars built by P-S for the Soo before and during WWII came with FCR roofs, black ends, and black backgrounds in the heralds. The Soo eliminated the black background from the heralds on the cars they built for themselves starting in 1948-49, but those cars had IDE ends and diagonal panel roofs. It's debatable if the lack of backgrounds in the herald would have carried over to re-paints, but the P-S cars were new enough that it seems none were re-painted. A few years later (1953) both the black ends and $ heralds were gone. Dennis Storzek

Steve,
811 cars of the same dimension and series 8101 to 9299 were listed in the October 1944 ORER and 805 in Jan 43, while the Jan 53 issue had 1396 cars in the 8101 to 9600 series.

They list a single car in the range 4301 -4399 and the notes state that car is owned by Mather.
32 cars in the series 9801 -9839; 8 cars in the series 9851 – 9868 and 9 cars in the series 9879 – 9919 all belong to North American Car, according to the notes.
The only other block of cars of note was 7501 – 7615 listed as 105 cars. The adjacent block, 7616 – 7630 (15 cars) have common dimensions, except slightly larger ice tanks (165 versus 153 cubic feet.)

No, but I took a very shallow dive. Wilson had what I would call a medium-size reefer fleet, something on the order of 2000 cars it seems. Data in my 1919 ORER is very sketchy. From 1925 to 1940 (inclusive), my ORERs lack any car count data that would help identify the important cars series. From 1945 (at least) forward there are car counts, but I am too wary of trying to backtrack the various series into the heart of the steam era. I tried that with Swift, and it was/is an exercise in frustration.

Clark Propst asked re: decals: "The dollar sign logo." K4 Decals has this set that looks like it will work. The 40 ft boxcar data appears to match that of the Modified 1937 AAR boxcar, though I recommend double checking against a photo to make sure. These decals are available in multiple scales. Ben Hom

Ron, I have a prototype photo of that exact car. 26000-26099 were built at the IC Centralia shops in 1956 and had
9 belt DF loading devices and a 1 3/4 inch wood deck floor. Hope this helps. Jeff
