Re: Another dry ice car

Steve SANDIFER

In 1936 the Santa Fe rebuilt 13 cars from RR-11 series into dry ice cars. 6000-6002 were modified with three compartments and three small side doors. These were modified again in 1949 to look like a traditional reefer but with two compartments accessible through the door on the side. These were assigned to Spencer Chemical dry ice service. They were rebuilt into other cars in 1953-54.

6003-6006 were modified into three compartments with three side doors. They were sold to Spencer Chemical in 1949 and became SCJX 300-303.

6007-6012 were modified into four compartments with 4 side doors. They were rebuilt into RR-50 cars in 1951.

Sunshine kit 68.1 models the 6000, 68.2 models 6001-6005, and 68.3 models 6007-6012. Charlie Slater did the masters.

Tom

Here are two more with gray sides and red ends - we may need to compile a timeline of ownership! :-)

As to color, I would assume either white or silver. Probably white; see below. No, it’s not Mathieson, but a competitor.

For the car I photographed in 1961, it really looks to be gray. With red ends. Here's a cropped portion of the photo I took just prior to the other one, while the Baldwins were picking up the Erie covered hopper from the interchange track.

Found 7 from recent builds. Additional ones from years past are still packed away in the basement.
Will put in the mail tomorrow.
If you ever end up with extra KC brakes, let me know as I can always use those.

Re: [Non-DoD Source] [RealSTMFC] Stencil On CB&Q Boxcar

Tony,

I suspect that the lease was like the current automobile leases - that the lessee was responsible for keeping the vehicle in good repair with all its parts, and for returning the leased vehicle at the end of the lease in good condition (normal wear and tear excepted) with all its parts, or else the lessee would have to pay damages or replace the missing parts. If the railroad bought the car from the lessor, there would be no deduction for missing hardware, as the lessee was responsible for those items during the lease.

Destroyed or disposed of dedicated equipment was especially costly, while shovel-out and/or steam-cleaning less so.  Loss of things like cross-bars and belts, were very expensive, since you had to go back to Evans, for example, for replacements.

But many of the GA-E cars were leased to the railroads. Did not the lessor own that loader equipment?

Okay I guess from my experience in the Law Department we dealt with the issue of load dividers and the potential for injury that those dividers created. I should have checked the ORER before writing my comments.

My understanding is that the car designation RB stands for “Refrigerator Bunkerless” meaning a car without ice bunkers and that RBL stands for “Refrigerator Bunkerless Load dividers” for the appliances within the car. That’s my memory from working at FGE.

Almost. The ORER says that RBL stands for "Refrigerator Bunkerless Loading devices." (Not all loaders had dividers.)

Almost. The ORER says that RBL stands for "Refrigerator Bunkerless Loading devices." (Not all loaders had dividers.)

How 'bout a week at -20 deg. F? Guaranteed to freeze the contents and burst the cans. There is a reason for modern RBL's.

Because FUBAR is an acronym... and it would have worked just as well as a noun. Stands to reason that since the F and U are important to the message being conveyed, that they would be retained in the new form; FUBEE, or FUBIE, with some descriptive words chosen so the result was still an acronym. Since such is not the case, I'm of the opinion that the origin is a contraction of "fake boobies", since fake is the demeaning idea Sir Richard wanted to convey. It doesn't make any difference if "foobie" never entered the general language; someone would only have to hear it once to latch on to it. Foobie certainly has the sound of the drivel TV writers have been pushing on use for the last sixty or so years.

As Smokey Stover would say, "Where there's foo there's fire!"

Yep, Intermountain PS-1 ends. I just pulled the exact same sprue out of an IM 40998 kit to confirm.

Douglas Harding

Elden true, but the car in photo was built in 1960. Clark is looking a report from 1949. The MSTL, which served Hopkins, purchased their first insulated boxcars or RBLS, for canned good service in 1957, no doubt to serve the growing need for insulated cars. Before then, canned goods were often shipped in reefers, without ice, esp in extreme weather, cold or heat. In extreme cold, as we experienced the past week or two, heaters were even added to keep the canned goods from freezing.

Clark;

Generally, they had to make some reasonable accommodation in either too hot summer, or too cool winter, to accommodate canned goods.  Reefers were perfect, but jealously guarded by their owners.

There is loads of correspondence on spoiled canned goods claims.

The attached is the non-reefer RR solution from the PRR:  Insulated, and with “Quick Loaders”, as restored for the Strasburg RR.

Jerry Michels asked:
"...how did the volume increase on twin hopper increase over the normal plain side versions?"

Reported volume for the rebuilds varied depending on the vendor supplying the sides, but one example for the USRA twin:

Original Car: 1880 cu ft
NYCS Lots 639-H, 640-H, 641-H, 645-H, 651-H, 655-H (1,877 cars): 1980 cu ft
Increase in cubic capability: 100 cu ft, 5.3%

Looking in my 5 slang dictionaries i can't find foobie, it isn't in a dictionary of railway terms, or language of the underworld. Could it be derived from the US cartoon character Smokey Storer. who used the word "Foo" as a substitute word for anything where he couldn't be bothered to find the correct word. the manufacturers might be accused of; couldn't be bothered to find the correct prototype. the word Foo was used by the RAAF and Richard Hendricksen was a keen and knowledgeable aviator.

Why is there a resistance to FUBAR as the origin? One can readily describe a lame model with the words behind that acronym (whichever word starting with "F" you prefer). It has always seemed to me that "foobie" is a natural descendant.

C&BT did NOT have a PS-1 in the line.  The Front Range PS-1 was the same as the McKean kit, which did NOT feature separate ends.

That was Stan Rydarowicz's kit before he passed away.  It's not currently available.

Jim Teese's kitbash article in the January 1998 issue of Model Railroader featured "homebrewed" door castings.

I got a good chuckle over “when it was convenient” comment. Thanks for the dose of reality, Tony.

Since we modelers don’t observe those instructions either, the stencils are purely cosmetic.

The loading prohibitions on the stencil under discussion are one of several stencils used by the CB&Q. I once asked a former car clerk, whether those kinds of car-side restrictions or "return to" legends were observed. "Sure," he said, "when it was convenient."

A good place to look would be the GSC collection at Museum of Transportation Library in St Louis; They have a lot of photos, I believe I saw some of what you’re looking for while I was there a couple of years ago. I do not know if they have reopened yet.

GSC was located in Eddystone, PA, near the Baldwin Locomotive Works.  GSC supplied the industry with one piece engine beds/frames with cylinders cast integrally, tender trucks, tender under frames and trailer trucks.  Great Northern used their products in locomotive rebuilds and new construction as did other carriers.  It appears that Lima used GSC castings and I assume that ALCO did as well.

Has anyone seen pictures of these castings enroute to end users or being unloaded?

Have you ever spent time inside a closed freight car sitting in bright sunlight for a week?
How 'bout a week at -20 deg. F? Guaranteed to freeze the contents and burst the cans. There is a reason for modern RBL's.
