GN Hog-Fuel car, was: [RealSTMFC] AB brake component location on the SP A-50-4

Hi Scott:

Great looking car. Was this some kit or a scratch built?

I recently finished two GN hog-fuel cars from Portland Car & Foundry kits. They are rather similar, with open tops, but have no exterior bracing.

Lots of A-50-6 box cars got AB brakes, and they were mounted in a conventional
way as you can see in this photo. The A-50-6's were rebuilt for "hog fuel" (wood chips)
and lost their roofs. If any A-50-4's got AB brakes I feel sure they would have the same
brake arrangements.

There are no A-50-4's left in the 1955 roster (ORER). I wonder if the modified cars
were only intended for MofW (company) service.

An example of this would be SP 63298, which became SPMW 1168 on January 21, 1953
and was assigned as a "tool car".

I have just started building the Speedwitch SP A-50-4 kit and would like to update it with AB brakes. The kit is supplied with K brakes and states that no A-50-4s made it past 1953 as there is no evidence of them being equipped with AB brakes. Since the kits manufacture, Tony Thompson has posted a blog with car maintenance records for some of the cars in the class, and it is clear that indeed at least some of the class did receive AB brakes and continued to operate beyond 1953. I'm just wondering if anyone on the list would have any info regarding correct component location. I would assume that the cylinder would be mounted in the same location as the original but what about the triple valve and the reservoir? So if I got this straight, all the implement loads were outbound from MM and everything else listed was inbound to MM. Is that correct?

This was the Hopkins plant. Served by the M&StL on the north side and the Milwaukee on the south side.  MM had a “ downtown” plant as well.  The Bay window caboose underframes were built there

According to Norfolk and Western Coal Cars, by Andrew Dow, that number series (12000 - 12999) was built by American Car & Foundry in 1922 at a cost of $1,900.00 per car.

The ladders came with the kit.  There are a number of etched brass parts in the kit including the ladders, running board end supports, and lateral running board supports.  The kit goes together very well.  The only parts I have added so far are PSC air hose brackets, Kadee 158 couplers, and Intermountain 0.088” wheelsets.  I will be able to prime this car and the other cars I am building here, but painting and decaling will have to wait until I get home.

Just wanted to say thanks for listening, responding, and being a part of the community.  I would extend the same thanks to Dennis from Accurail, Andrew from Westerfield, and David from Tangent.  (Did I miss someone, sorry if I did?) We are always pining for our favorite prototypes and it is great that you all are listening. And I am sure many of us are also very thankful that you continue to offer parts, as that has got to be tedious to manage.

Clark,

 

The ladders came with the kit.  There are a number of etched brass parts in the kit including the ladders, running board end supports, and lateral running board supports.  The kit goes together very well.  The only parts I have added so far are PSC air hose brackets, Kadee 158 couplers, and Intermountain 0.088” wheelsets.  I will be able to prime this car and the other cars I am building here, but painting and decaling will have to wait until I get home.

They are a great resource but we try to back up their info with other sources where possible.

Garth : No - that's the wrong number series.

Southern did have post-1950 PS-1's with 6 foot doors, no question.

I think you’ve done about the best you can do with the image of No. 13.   I imported both images into Corel Draw and got the

23 sized about the same as 13 by putting a box around the AMERICAN STRAW BOARD COMPANY lettering on the 23 and resizing the image to match the box on the 13. 

I think the lettering is a good match to one that I think I got from the Old Time list “Signpainter Serif Block Medium”.

Contact me off list if you want the graphics…if you have more pictures I would be happy to make up a pdf for you to make decals from.

My father recently got the itch to reproduce a 1907 American Strawboard boxcar (as seen here and here) and has given me the job of researching decals.

 

I used Photoshop Element’s perspective crop tool (learned from Ted Culotta’s Lightroom clinic and discussion on this forum - thanks!) to straighten the image at the first link, with I thought decent results (see first attached image). The second image, when straightened with the same tool turned out oddly compressed left to right. I spoke to my son (UX developer/designer) and brother (graphic artist) about this, and both were initially perplexed about the result (see the second image).

 

With that background, here’s my question. I can fix the second image by specifying the ratio of height to length when using the perspective crop tool - if I have dimensions.

 

Length

  • Is the 36’ dimension for this car the inside length, the outside “box” length or over the strike plates?
  • Is there a standard dimension for the siding board width? 

 

Height

  • Is there a standard door-opening height?
  • Is there a known/standard sheathing height?
  • As a stand-in for the second point, what is the inside height of these cars? It’s not listed on the car side.
