Friends,

I was surprised to discover the very photo of TT 62 (of which I own a print) on George Elwood's Fallen Flags site. The photo was taken in Kansas City, Missouri on 25 August 1951 by W. Krambeck.

M-K-T 47485 is from series 47001-47500. Inside dimensions: L 40' 6", W 8' 6", H 8' 7"' doors: 6' X 8' 2"; capacity:  2980 cubic feet, 80T. Single deck. According to my October 1958 ORER, there were still 410 of these cars left. Surprisingly for a Texas railroad, this was the only class of stock cars M-K-T owned at that time.

I did contact the Tyler museum but no reply as yet - it maybe too early. I’ll let you know if they are able to help.

Interesting that although only separated by 10 numbers one car has Z-braces wile the other has U-channels.

Re: [proto48] Finished Project

Of all the models of SS boxcars I've seen over the years, that one best approaches the appearance of the prototype's sides.

The vertical lines between boards are not exaggerated and the unevenness is subtle.

Even zoomed in, the sides look very good.

Individual boards and individual finishing seem the way to go for results like this model.

The second intermediate picture makes the side boards look like a piece of fine furniture.

Lee's work sets a very high bar for modeling. Getting the methods from the masters is always a treat.

Thanks for the article.

Gene,
The work is so good that I kept expecting you to "April Fools" us and tell us
that it was a pic of a prototype.  ;-)

Note, by the way, that the Tichy wheels have ribbed backs.   I spoke to a Tichy rep at a train show a while ago and asked if there were plans for smooth-backed wheels and he was non-committal.  Having scale wheels Iand trucks!) for non-operating display purposes would sure be nice....

Tim,

The embossed TM shows up well in the wheel car photo you posted.

I love the Reynolds Aluminum trademark embossed into the car side! I don't think Sunshine reproduced
that when they offered this car as a resin kit. :-D

Of greater interest to me is the Rock Island aluminum express boxcar behind the wheel car.  It has been painted green, but looks quite a lot like it did in 1946.

Absolutely beautiful museum quality model! The mud splatter on the ends is very convincing, do you know how that was applied?

I’ve got a laser/resin manufacturer interested in doing the Cotton Belt double sheathed LCL long body caboose.  If anyone has plans can you contact me?

Those are not Allied full cushion trucks. But they are high speed trucks.

Responding to Tim's posting of photos, of note

in the first photo the RI boxcar has Allied full cushion trucks and that would make it an express car I believe.

Can't really make out the # on that car though.

Looked everywhere I could think of for photos of the subject cars - no luck. If anyone has a photo of SOU 17500-178197, 287000-287999, or 315700-315949 series gondolas circa 1940s or 50s that they would share I would be very appreciative. There were enough of them that they would not have been a rare car on a layout set in 1949. any help would be welcome. Thanks, Tony ,Wagner
