    Very true, Tim, and in addition, PFE was a participant in the Railway Express pool, so that cars were moved where needed under REA direction. They really could be seen anywhere.

freight trains with less-perishable loads or carried in freights in the off season.

Here is another installment of "Daily Interchange Report of Cars" from the NJI&I to the Wabash at Pine in 1953.  The following list is dated 07May53.  All cars originated at South Bend.  I am showing Initials, Number, Destination, Contents.

Perhaps a poor choice of words. I only meant to say "typical" or "ordinary" or "standard." As others pointed out, it is indeed the post-1954 rebuilt type with the very narrow fascia along the top of the sides.

I also noticed the ends of the orange crates are not solid boards like I remember in the 50's.  My dad was a grocery store produce manager and I had all the orange crates I ever wanted.  Sadly, they are all gone.

This is a photo of (supposedly) orange crates being loaded into a PFE reefer. What caught my eye were the words “Lay Flat” on the crates. I’ve never seen this on the many orange crate photos I’ve reviewed.

Normally, orange crates are stacked on their ends when placed in a reefer to promote air circulation. Laying them flat tends to damage the oranges. On the other hand, the date of this photo is February 1942, several months into World War II. Prior to the war, 462 packing crates made up a standard reefer load of oranges. During World War II, the Office of Defense Transportation ordered that cars were to be loaded with 693 crates.  This attempt at better car utilization resulted in a lot of damaged fruit. Due to the high amount of damage to loads, the order was revised to reduce the number of crates to 561. The order was completely rescinded in 1947 and the 462 standard re-emerged.

Perhaps the “Lay Flat” instructions were to remind those loading the car that things had changed.

Any thoughts on this?

Maybe we should bug Steve Funaro for a resin kit. :-) These PFE BR-1 express reefers enjoyed long
careers from the 1920's to 1960 and perhaps later. And they travelled all over.

A rebuilt PFE BR-1 - Before the rebuilding the road name was written on a wide fascia "letterboard".

Beautiful photo.  This is STL.  The TRRA's High Line.  The old, but in service TRRA lines are visible below that serviced a number of warehouses before the Arch was built.  Jerry Michels

Well, as it happens, you are wrong. It's a totally conventional PFE passenger express reefer.

If memory serves, the group of R40-10s were the only freight reefers to enter express service.  In the photo, there's a tapered shadowline from the ice hatch platform to the roof. That's a giveaway that the roof is arched. The car looks to be one of the 50' express reefers as rebuilt c1954 with narrow fascia and relocated lettering.  The photo does make it  look like a shorter car, but the whole consist is foreshortened by telephoto.
