I noticed the side door of the boxcar was opened as well as a side window of the bus.  Once watched my car being parked in a Manhattan garage. The cars were parked so close together the attendants climbed in and out though open windows as there was no room to open the doors. A driver could have backed in and climbed out an open bus window through the opened freight car door.

MEK doesn't lose potency. I have a half gallon that is at least 20 years old and it still works quite well. I pour from the larger can into a small glass bottle with a brush attached to the lid. The only thing I can think of is that water got into the MEK, perhaps humidity?  Jerry Michels

I use technical grade methylene chloride for very fast bonding and MEK when I need a few seconds of working time.  Methylene chloride was the original ingredient in Tenax 7R and MicroWeld before they converted to "non-hazardous" ingredients.  Non-hazardous is a joke, these ingredients are less hazardous than the old ingredients, but are definitely not 100% non-hazardous.  Methylene chloride works well on some plastics that are hard to weld with other cements (ABS).  For delrin and similar plastics I use a two step process with Loctite 770 surface prep and Loctite 401 CA.

Box car weathering question.

I have been looking for color photographs to try and make my weathering more realistic. I found the one that is linked below of a Northern Pacific car on Ebay.  I was wondering if the white stuff would indicate the car was in hide service or something spilled and they tried washing it out?  Trying to figure out if this would be appropriate for random cars or only cars in hide service.

I’ll agree with Scott. MEK is the fastest but it flashes quickly and the parts need to be in contact prior to application. Testor’s is slow working. Use it only in areas where you need more working time. 

I use the scalecoat plastic cement now when building styrene freight car kits. 

Not familiar with the new tenex. Used to love it.

was the last thing to be applied. ;-)

And there is a chain hanging from the undercarriage... The bus was pulled from the car.

10" x 10" in HO ??? That's a BIG match stick! Most of them are far smaller.

But the cheapest source by far is TOOTHPICKS. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes
e.g. flattened, square, round, and fancy.

Some of these busses were so wide it was impossible to exit the bus when inserted, so it may have been pushed in and pulled out.
