Midland Terminal Ore Car identification

mmihalo763@...

From the mid 1930s on, the Midland Terminal RR of Colorado began building a collection of second hand steel hopper and gondola cars to replace their aged fleet of wood cars.   Among these cars were Ingoldsby Steel ore cars, likely from the Colorado & Southern that used them for iron ore movements from the Sunrise Mine in Wyoming, Rio Grande 36' GS drop bottom gondolas, Ralston steel drop bottom gondolas, and finally we come to this series of car.   Can anyone identify the possible origins of these cars?  They are reminiscent a cut down version of cars that were owned by the Nevada Northern.  Otherwise it looks like cars I've seen on the Copper Range, Tonopah & Tidewater and the Butte, Anaconda & Pacific.   These cars arrived in 1935 or so, and Mel McFarlands book on the line lists these cars as part of an order that came from the D&RGW for GS gons, which they very obviously aren't

Many thanks, Roger.  That 21st car makes me wonder if PGE number 807 was to have been used for that car but, for some reason, they never showed it in the “Equipment Record” book.  At some point, I will have to get over to Victoria and see what else I can dig up in the old PGE Accounts.

Based on photographs I have, PGE 812 and 822 both show the deeper centre sill.  As 812 is the only post-1952 photograph I have that shows a car with the deeper centre sill, it appears that the other eight cars in Lot 1 were all among those written off in 1951 or 1952.

Greg Kennelly

Just realized the broadside photo didn’t come through.  Here is one from the side, and another with the shorter CB&Q car I did a while ago.  Not the HO 1’ height difference I wanted, but there is a difference.

Yes, it was letters mostly with the Smokebox Graphics, plus Rs are from Ted’s set that you sent Craig.  Its fun having the correct Rs!  Thanks again for your help making this model happen!

Larry - LOL. I often ask myself this question...
I'm still running XP on my 15 year old Pentium... :-P
I just think of it philosophically - there is so much
out there, that it just doesn't matter. :-)

You could spend months going through the Barriger collection
and it's accessible and downloadable on Flickr. And Flickr has
other rail treasures without bound... :-D
