While I typically think that canopy glue is not as strong as CA, I do feel canopy glue holds up better under tension and shear than CA does, so hopefully you will be happily surprised by the results. Let us all know how this holds up!

Good idea, Brian. I have used this method myself on many cars.

I also find that attaching stake pockets with canopy glue is much easier to control alignment than using CA's. I have yet to have a stake pocket flick off, using this method.

No.  There was a minor threadjack during that conversation - the Monon model Chuck Cover posted was NOT based on the Walthers steel car in question, but on a Walthers flat injection-molded composite gon based on the USRA 40 ft gon.  If you use that kit with Dreadnaught ends, you'd get a model that's close to this prototype.

However, the Walthers/Varney/AHM/Rivarossi/Cox/Bachamnn steel gon is nowhere close to the car in question.

Friends,

I did a blow up of the cars in front of the Hills Brothers Coffee plant in San Francisco from one of the photos we discussed. Can anyone identify the wooden boxcar in this clip? With all wooden ends, it is definitely NOT HBCX 161 or 162. It might be an earlier boxcar they owned, or it could be an interchange car from another railroad.

Interestingly, I don't see HBCX on Ian Cranstone's list of reporting marks, though he does list HBKX for Hills Brothers from 7/1932-7 1937. An error maybe, or another mystery? Can anyone check ORERS for this? I only have 1958, and Hills Brothers are not listed there.

Brian, Bryian and all,

Andy Carlson is correct, this brake detail set was produced by Terry Wegmann.

Terry produced this set in a couple of different versions, one specifically for his Pacific Freight Enterprises PFE R-40-18, 19, 21 car and one that was a more generic version that had additional brake lever components, some of which were for more modern cars. The tooling evolved over time.

Details West marketed them as a separately packaged part.

Martin bought these parts from Terry several times to include in the Sunshine kits along with a separate tank, AB valve, cylinder sprue. I'm sure many remember that part too.

Not sure about the ID of the cars, but this is SP trackage (I believe), located now where the Rte 80/Eisenhower Hwy climbs up to the Bay Bridge. See attached screenshot from GoogleEarth, which has a 1938 Air Photo superimposed. You can clearly see the tracks crossing Brannan between 8th and 9th to what looks like a freight house area.

This makes total sense - I had forgotten that WP had track within the city of San Francisco along with the other roads I mentioned. I even remember finding a diamond where the SP and WP crossed each other (the trackage around and including the diamond was abandoned but still in place in 1985 when I arrived in San Francisco, it is long gone now)

Absolutely WP. These cars were WP's signature boxcars. They were built by Mt. Vernon in two batches as series 16001-16800 in 1917 and 16801-18300 in 1918. Also built in 1917 were matching ventilators 30001-30200. As built, all three series had Queenan or Murphy roofs and wooden ends with vertical braces. After WP joined PFE, the ventilators were superfluous and around 1929 were rebuilt with innie Murphy or Dreadnaught steel ends, and in most cases Murphy XLA Murphy Pivoted Flexible Roofs, renumbered 18301-18500. The rebuilding continued with upgrading the boxcars as well into 1931 or 1932. After 1931 the cars received the iconic WP herald on the doors. Eventually the three series were compressed into one as 16001-18500.

      Not the State Belt this far down. I would say most likely SP.
