USATC boxcars at Mt Union, PA

Jim Eager

Does anyone know if the original source and builder has been confirmed for the 15-16 US Army Transportation Corps 36ft single-sheathed boxcars that sat for years in the EBT yard at Mt Union PA? (Since scrapped and removed.) Several sources I found say they were ex-BAR as the outline of the BAR lettering could be seen under the peeling olive drab paint.

Check your web site.   Maskislanddecals.com. I offer many Rock Island decals.  I am not sure what paint scheme but I have the largest selection of Rock Island decals.

What an amazing color photo Tim!!

I have this same kit in the stash as well.  The photos will be very helpful.

#23 of 26 is especially interesting, as being an example of a frameless flat car.  There's also some shots of a Schnabel, also a frameless flat car, I guess.

Sunshine made kits for some of these, and so there must have been decals, but other than that, I don’t recall any decals specifically for these cars.  It is a pretty simple scheme and could, perhaps, be cobbled from Champ road name sets.  Perhaps Ron Von Werder from Rocket Express would sell you some of his for the auto cars of similar vintage.

Keep clicking on the arrows and you’ll see a trove of high/wide loads. Each is interesting in its own right.

The second and third pictures appear to be taken at Roundout, IL, where the EJ&E interchanges with the Milwaukee Road.

The load (which looks like a refinery cracking tower, or kiln of some sort) is carried on 4 flat cars. The wider end is on a Milwaukee, 4-truck flat car. Interestingly, just behind this is a 1942 built Milwaukee Road gun flat. There is another MILW gun flat at the other end.
