Charlie,

Here is the one that I use. It is the base formula like the Future was.
There are other variations of the brand that may work too. 
I would probably stay away from any that are cloudy though they may dry clear and work just fine.
I'd test them first.

Latitudinal Running Board Hand Holds; was A few period boxcar roofs 1948 St Louis

As Dave Parker pointed out the dimensions were governed by the US Safety Appliance Act.  Attached is the revised 1937 AAR Plate 1517-C showing the position of the “Roof Hand Hold” on the “Latitudinal Running Board”.  

The earlier ARA Plates (1923 & 1932) show nearly the same set backs though the 1923 hand hold was shown as 19-1/2” (wide) x 20-1/4” (long).  The AAR’s Plate 1541-C for metal latitudinal running boards shows the same dimensions as Plate No. 1517-C.

Milwaukee Single Sheathed Boxcar

The Milwaukee Road Steam Locomotives L Class Mikados on the back cover has a picture taken at Wisconsin Dells on October 3, 1940 of a newly shopped single sheathed boxcar from the B end ladder forward (number unreadable) showing a bracket grab iron used as the top rung of the side ladder to reduce problems from the side roof overhang.  A review of the Sunshine Prototype Data Sheet #47A pictures of these cars does not show bracket grabs used as the top side ladder step. 

 

The boxcars were in both the 70500-708499 and 708500-713999 series.  Since I built 3 of these kits without bracket grabs, I will do the fourth one with them.

Finished the DL&W car and two more on Saturday. The WofA, box car and a RI flat. Here's the finished flat too. I've put both box cars on eBay as I have enough for my layout. I'll operate with these while the auction runs. It's a good way to continue to build kits without accumulating too many  ;  )) 
The Flat is a Chad Boas kit I bought from him at the St L RPM. Decals are from Mask Island. They're designed for a car rebuilt with bulkheads, just changed the numbers. Ended up using K4 decals on the DLW model. Turned out ok for all the missteps I made...The Sunshine model was just a fun build as usual. Only trick with it was doing the tu-tone paint without masking. All were weathered with Pan Pastels. Thanks for all the help with pertinent information. Thanks to Steve Hile for info on the flat car. You can find the models on eBay using this address...I hope? Clark Propst

My grandpa said his father, a Terminal fireman, would take the TRRA shuttle from St Louis Union Station to the yards on the East side. He must have had a long commute because they lived in Carondelet.

Not sure if these help any Steve, but what strikes me is how clean the rolling stock is. I'm a NG guy but love the dual gauge operations. One feature that many don't model when weathering is the streaking left from the water/dirt/mud flying up as seen on the end of the ART Reefer in the first pic. Photos are from my personal collection of Tom Gildersleve photos. Enjoy.

I do not look at contemporary freight cars to weather my steam freight car models. Oily journals vs roller bearings create different weathering. Steam locos vs. modern diesels make a difference. Different paint composition, welded vs. riveted construction – all make a difference. I just wish there were more color photos from the 40s and early 50s to use as guides.

These photos of car roofs remind us of the prevalence of soot from coal burning in the steam and transition eras. Rain apparently didn't wash much off Reduced maintenance in the depression era and then WW 2 with car shortages and less available labor for washing cars would contribute to the grimy appearance.  As an early 1950's modeler of the far west should all of the box cars more than a few months after building or a repaint have shown this dark coating.  Railroads weren't the only source of the soot as everything burned coal in large parts of the country. 

I am not sure that the bunker oil burned in the far western part of the country caused as much soot or just that it was spread/dissipated over much larger areas.  Alco and Baldwin diesels certainly put out clouds of black exhaust.
