Re: Cudahy 1501-1600
Not a Mather car, though Cudahy did use Mather reefers. All photos I have of Cudahy Mather reefers have the Mather name visible somewhere. And all have six hinges, not four.
The photo of 5557 is from the Fairmont Motor Co archives, demonstrating their experiment with a Goodyear rubber spring block. I scanned the high rez image at the Marin Co Historical Society a number of years ago for Richard Hendrickson for the Billboard Reefer book and have shared that photo many times. At 1200 dpi the repack lettering reads “REPACKED C.R.L.X. E.CH.IND. 2.6.35”

Attached is a slightly different photo of CRLX 5557. My file name indicates it is a Mather car. Note the clear stencil near the right side ladder indicating Return to E. Chicago, Ind.
The car wears a 2-35 E. CH. weigh stencil and a Built 9-28 stencil. I believe this came to me from Ray Breyer.

Re: Where does the ‘Empty Return’ Stencils go on n an SP SS boxcar?
Thanks for all the replies; given the particular use of the cars to the Eugene agent I’ll leave it off.

The photos that were attached are actually A-50-6's converted to hogfuel cars. They are the 50' variety. I know the A-50-4's were also so converted. This would make a fairly simple kitbash of a Funaro kit. Since this is a flat kit, build it without the roof and cobble up 4 "flapper" type side doors. I also believe the SP did the same to their 40' single SS boxcar types (B-50-13 thru 16) Rich Christie

One side is angled so I assume it’s against a ‘Z’ brace. These kinds of painted assignment legends were usually near the door on the left. Doug,
You may well have identified the use of the Eugene "return to" placard. The placard makes perfect sense for the photo (likely via Tim O'Connor), but will not do much good for Charlie Duckworth's SP A-50-4 project unless he is building a hog fuel car. The photo is very clearly a hog fuel car, as one can see through the open door the mound of hog fuel ("sawdust" inside and the lack of roof. SP converted a number of older box cars to haul hog (or "hogged") fuel, mostly within the timber region (e.g., Oregon). Photos certainly confirm these cars post-WWII into the 1950s. For reference, the first wood chip racks started going onto GS gons around 1956. Before that, the commodity hauled was hog fuel--basically sawdust used for both home heating and industrial fuel. This predated the wood chip traffic for paper pulp mills. I well recall a few old house basements with sawdust bins and home furnaces fueled by that product in the 1950s, but the practice was rapidly being replaced by oil fuel--much safer and less messy! Think spontaneous combustion in a bin of sawdust. I am fairly certain the hog fuel traffic was fairly local to Oregon and maybe Northern California. As with the later wood chips, there was not much (if any) profit to be made in hauling very far. Bill Decker McMinnville, Oregon

Could be but it’s angled and placards were rectangular. Before computer routing many ‘agent assigned’ cars were stenciled with specific empty return information.

Models of earlier PS-1 series were all freight car brown. Let the dissent begin! Todd Sullivan

If it’s on a white background, maybe it’s a placard.

Re: Cudahy 1501-1600
Clover House offers dry transfers in O scale https://cloverhouse.com/Cart/product_info.php?products_id=11981 They had them in HO, but are no longer listed on their website. You might contact Clover House or search eBay.
Don Valentine of NERS commissioned a special run of HO Atlas meat reefers with this scheme back in 2014. I doubt he has any left.

As nearly as I can tell the CRLX series 5501 – 5600 was built by GATC in 1928, this photo shows fresh paint in 1935 along with experimental rubber springs in the trucks.

GA built 100 cars in 1935
