GN plywood side boxcars
Reviewing the article in RPC 19, it mentions the 1945 batch had National B-1, ASF A-3 Ride Control, or Barber Stabilized trucks. Has a breakdown on which cars had which type been found? I’ve acquired a Sunshine model of 44105 and am updating it a little. It’s currently on Athearn trucks.
I suspect the information does not exist since Pat would’ve put it in the article if he had it, but 11 years have passed since the article was written. Brian J. Carlson -- Brian J. Carlson, P.E. Cheektowaga NY

A bit challenging to build, but great models. Congrats on the score! Yes, I was watching, and my fingers were twitching as it got close :) Steve Stull Winslow7076

That’s a lot of work for a distinctive car. And that’s an interesting ladder jig. I may adopt some aspects of that jig.

I have completed the build of a Spokane, Portland & Seattle Steel (SP&S) box car, I numbered 12900. My build was done using the recent James Kinkaid article in the August 2021 RMC on this car series. I cast resin ends, roof and doors, applied car body details, photo etch ladders with wire ladder rungs, under body details, Archer rivets, etc. And, SP&S lettering and paint. If you are interested, photos and write up are now available on my blog I have to share photos and writeup of modeling projects on my Minneapolis & Northland Railroad Company. Truck Color Questions
Nelson Moyer
As a break from building boxcars, I started two RCW gondolas, the MILW 80000 series and the NYC 324000 Series. Both cars were painted freight car red as built. Instructions are silent about truck color, so were they black or freight car color? The MILW rib side cars I built had freight car color trucks, but I don’t know about gondolas

Chuck,
The scheme is well represented in RP Cyc, volume 4, if you have that.

I now have on order the Westerdield decals for this model but would like some advice on colors for the paint scheme. I am looking at the original scheme that I believe was gray sides with boxcar red/brown ends and sides. It also looks like there is a red/brown panel below the door and possibly along the bottom of the sides. I do not have the Westerfield instructions and cannot find prototype photos. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Chuck Cover Santa Fe, NM

I would suggest the possibility that the casting was poured without any special accomodation for the holes, and when removed from the mold the holes were drilled at the foundry prior to shipping. The foundry could have a set of pre-made jigs to properly locate the drill and therefore the holes, speeding the process when a large number of castings need to be drilled identicallyYeah, it would be work for a BIG radial drill, but no matter how big, the frame would have to be shifted multiple times. The advantage of a radial drill is for fine adjustment; the heavy part only needs to be shifted for gross positioning, and the drill easily adjusted to hit the spot, so to speak. Dennis Storzek

The first (indoor) photo was taken when it was on display at the Rochester station. The arched tile behind it was a drinking fountain.
