Re: [EXT] [RealSTMFC] Chalk Marks on the Roof?
I seem to recall that photo being posted to our list before. I see the car number as RI 25189. If so, it is a pre-PS-1 post war Pullman Standard built boxcar with 6 panel riveted sides on each side of the door with a Murphy roof and Improved Dreadnaught ends. There were 500 cars in the series 25000-25499 built in 1946. Good roof photos are, indeed rare.

Scott, Folks,
The time stamp is 21:21 in this interview of Angela Sutton, a skilled PRR modeler. She is showing a photo of Homestead, PA. The date is unclear, but most likely in the late 1940s, or 1950s, as it is a B&W photo but the car has steel roofwalks. While the angle and resolution of the photo are challenging, it certainly looks like a car number, upside down to the perspective of the photographer.
I have never noticed this being done before, so I think it is probably rare. As to the reason, well, brakemen did what was needed to get the job done. In all likelihood, it is location specific, so that a crew person, riding the tops of the cars, would know where to stop the cut to spot the car in the correct location.
I certainly wouldn't go bonkers and add this detail to all my boxcars, but to have it on one or two of a fleet of 100s is probably fine. It should also be noted that certain types of cars, such as refrigerator cars would have the number stenciled on the roof or hatch so that icing crews knew how much ice/salt to add.

I was watching Ken Patterson's weekly show- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtcnbUNNfZM&t=1662s At approximately 20 minutes in, there is a photo of a box car roof with, what appears to be, the cars' reporting marks chalked on the roof panel adjacent to a lateral walkway. I've never seen this before- how common was it? And Why? Scott Haycock

Bruce, They are HO. You will need the Intermountain 1937 10' IH Box Car as the core. I am sure, with some sawing off ends and such, you can use the Red Caboose 1937 cars or the Branchline Yardmaster series. Rich Christie

New Kit Release from National Scale Car B&O M55's
I am happy to announce our Newest Kit Release.
Baltimore & Ohio M55, M55A & M55B 40' 1937 ARR Boxcar mini kits. Between 1940 and 1942, The Baltimore and Ohio took delivery of 1500 40' boxcars from orders split between Pressed Steel Car (M55 series), and Pullman Standard (M55A and M55B series). The orders specified a 10’ interior height and 6’ doors built to the AAR standard but with a few distinguishing features. Both builders used their own proprietary ‘Car Builder’s Ends’. The Pressed Steel Cars had unique 4-5 square corner ends with a stepped flat style rib while the Pullman Standard Cars had 4-5 round corner ends with a tapered rib that wrapped around the round corner end. All cars were equipped with Duryea cushioned under frames. Two styles of Duryea under frame construction were fitted. The M55’s and M55A’s used centre sills built up from ship channels while the M55B had a centre sill utilizing a Z26 rolled and welded steel member. All cars were equipped with a flat panel roof with interior car lines that featured a lower flat panel used on the panels closest to the car ends. Both builders supplied Youngstown doors with Camel fixtures. For further details and purchasing please go to www.nationalscalecar.com Ryan Mendell www.nationalscalecar.com

I think you’re right - it was an old Paint Shop in MR I was thinking of - on BAR cars. Thanks! Marty

Thanks, Rufus. But that’s the short version. In the long version, Joe was the night yardmaster, he would know the answer, and he hasn’t gone to bed yet. Call him. And Joe says, car of lumber for Memphis. But it’s a tank car, etc. and Joe says, “Send it to Memphis and it’ll be their problem.” Slightly better IMO.

Re: Help with MEC boxcar color - DOOR COLOR?

No, you might be thinking of BAR, which had 1932 BCR boxcars with green doors. I’ve never seen anything indicating other that one color on MEC BCR cars.

Re: Help with MEC boxcar color
The very first green MEC box car was painted in November 1953.

I like this shot because it shows a faded (bluer, not lighter) green box car with a freshly painted car.

From what I can tell if modeling fall of 1953 you can include a very newly painted - shiny(!) - car - but obviously the vast majority of MEC boxcars would still have been BCR! --

One further question on MEC boxcars for the group - somewhere I remember reading the BCR MEC boxcars had green (or black?) doors. I can’t remember where I saw that - perhaps it was an early NEB&W related Paint Shop column in MR?

Curious if anyone has a source that confirms (or disproves) this. Thanks in advance, Marty

Re: Help with MEC boxcar color
By the way I think the green came in in 1953, but I’ve read where it was 55 so not sure if you know let me know. I too will do the brown scheme for my layout since my time ends in fall of 53 so I can run FM H-16-44’s. But I really like the green

Just say’in Who’s decals did you use for the brown scheme? Fenton
