Re: Tichy's USRA SS Rebuilt P&LE ~ PMcKY 40 foot box

Ken Adams

As a follow up, The NSC NYC decal set finally arrived. I went through my file of Essential Freight Cars but did not find the rebuild article. But then I noticed it was just in the rest of the July 2004 RMC which I tossed many years ago saving only the Essential Freight Cars articles. I guess this will be a semi-foobie. I don't feel like like taking the ladders off the NYC end molding.  I think I will follow up with this in my Plastic Freight Car Builders group.  It's a good thing I ordered a bunch of Tichy Andrews trucks a while back.

I'm beginning to feel the appeal or RTR cars like the Rapido X31a I just bought when you can find an exact match.

Re: Photos of NC&StL 70100-70199 and SP&S 32005-32054 41' Flatcar Ends

Ken Adams

I found a new in the box Tichy 4021 flat car kit discounted to $8.00 at my Local Hobby Shop. I couldn't pass that up. There is a PDF on the SP&S website that indicates these were in service until 1968. Would they still have had K type break gear that late? Were they in interchange service? One of the photos was of an ex-Oregon Electric flat car SP&S 32307 in San Diego in 1954 but the underframe is shadowed and I cannot tell if it has AB or K brakes.

If they were in interchange service would they have been modernized to use AB brakes by 1954 (my cut off date?)  If they were modernized with AB brakes what was the layout for the break gear. There are some tantalizing indications in some of the photos in this thread that the reservoir was mounted crosswise rather than in line with the frame. Does anyone have a diagram or picture of either the prototype or a model with the AB layout to share.

Ray Carson, did your PM sources give you any information on the brakes that could be shared.

Thanks

That matches my experience from a couple of years ago when I did mine. The wheels came to the edge of the ends!  I had to bend the A-Line steps way out to clear.  At that point in my resin I figured that the manufacturer knew what they were doing. Ppbbbtt!

My solution was like making sausage; I cut the underframe by the two boosters and filed away enough resin to bring in the centerline to 30’ 6” (as it just looked better). Then glued the three pieces to a piece of Evergreen and add Evergreen strips to the two ends to close up the void.

Very likely buyers. It was very common to have a traveling produce auction that went from car to car, selling each carload as it went. Then, the different buyer's trucks would descend  like a plague of locusts and empty the cars.

Great example of produce unloading.

I tried to reserve one car, and then it said I had to order two cars.

Rapido is ridiculous. Good luck to them. Reminds me of Pacific Western Rail Systems.

The Westerfield Models kits do not follow the LV left-opening door prototypes that are being discussed. The F&C kit is the topic and it reflects a different prototype.

Given this is the LV, and they loved rebuilding freight cars, some three times over. There is some more references out there. Unfortunately, I do not have these copies, but in notes, apparently RMC, 3/2000 p.80 is to contain photos and drawings. Also, Westerfield did the early beginnings of these cars, and his notes say in 1933 all “sound” cars were rebuilt with the Duryea under frames. Now, don’t forget “Essential Freight Cars 28” 2/2006 RMC was devoted to these, and Ted makes no mention of modifications to the F&C floor casting. Lastly, if all else fails, the 1:1 still exists at the Railway Museum of PA.

Well that was a fat thumb response.
Try this one: Miner handbrake
I will dig some more to see if info on the running board exists.
