Re: M&StL LT 70001 GATC "Dri-Flow" tank car

Matt Mihalo

Roger & Gene, do you have any source proving that 70003 came from the Copper Range?  The complete Copper Range roster doesn't show any of their rock cars being sold to the M&STL, all of the steel sided cars except 3 were kept until 1973, and the other 3 were scrapped before then. It looks very much like a Calumet & Hecla, ex Mineral Range AC&F steel sided rock cars built in 1913 and 1916. Calumet & Hecla bought around 100 of these in the 20s, and the Mineral Range kept the other 100.  Would you happen to have a diagram of this car?

Fabulous car, and even better pic!

The weathering is incredible.

I love the spliced end.  Those look like the original USRA end panels.

Whose was this rebuild?

Yep, last summer it was still in the same place.  It's roughly halfway between the MP Salina depot and the UP Union depot, which are all of four or five blocks apart.

The number appears to be 134043, although the last couple of digits are a bit uncertain.

It just occured to me that the grab irons are intact, there is no fencing, and is what lawyers
love to call an "attractive nuisance". Because if a kid climbs up there and falls, someone
is going to sued. :-( It's actually nice to see something NOT hyper-protected and therefore
spoiled.

Good catch. As Earl said, no they didn't, so the car in the photo must be a larger capacity class X, with an underframe. The class V Van Dyke cars had exceptionally heavy bottom sheeta (11/16" thick, almost twice as thick as normal) to take the place of the underframe, with large cats combined cast bolsters and draft sills riveted directly to it.

I'm about to do some of the Sunshine conversions for various ATSF cars, since I picked up a couple of the underframe minikits.  The original Sunshine concept included a C&BT boxcar body, but I'll probably use an IM or Branchline body, depending on prototype, instead.  The reason I threw this question out is that there occasionally are prototypes that I run across and think that someday I could build that.  One that I've been thinking about is a Santa Fe Bx-11, 12 or 13 full steel body rebuild.

Does a frameless car have tank bands to the bolster instead of a frame ?
No, the Van Dyke V cars had elaborate cast steel bolsters that were riveted directly to the tank. Tank bands were unnecessary with such an arrangement. Refer back to the various photos and drawings already shared in this thread.

I'll point out that Sunshine did a number of mini-kits that included the lower portion of the sides, including the outside frame member of the original underframe and the brackets to attach the new sides, plus the under-door configuration, that were common to many rebuilds.  Other newer resin manufacturers may have done similar.

But I admit I hadn't thought through the underframe issue, other than maybe to use a Tichy part.  I agree that'll depend on the prototype.
