“Roster shot of Chicago, Burlington & Quincy stock car number 55966, which I believe is part of the SM-16 class. The 36-foot car was built in April of 1928, and while the date and location of the photo are not known, there are visible service dates of June of 1950, so that’s a general timeframe.”

Alternatively, one can buy an ambient air oven thermometer and place it on the glass sheet or metal plate. These thermometers come with their own stand (no binder clip needed) and are inexpensive - prices start at around $5.00.

Low oven temperatures can be checked by placing the glass plate or metal sheet in a rimmed baking sheet, then clipping the probe of a meat thermometer to the rim using a binder clip so it is measuring ambient air temperature in the oven. This adds a lot of confidence compared to relying on the oven dial.

I think built by GATC (not X) in 1937 is all I have seen in clear photos, but maybe some
were built in 1940? In any case they are very similar to the PFE R-40-10 which was built
beginning in 1936. For example the door hinges are different. Maybe that's a manufacturer
difference?

Built by GATX in 1940 according to the NEW date stenciled on the car..  The diagram in the 1954 diagram book says 1941 and 42 for those numbers.  I know the photo is after the date of the list, but the car isn't and company ice service was a thing in the stem era.  I don't have any idea when it went into company service.

Thanks Bruce.  According to the IC 1960 equipment list it was a 50 ton car built in 1957.  Actually it was the exposed bolster top that caught my eye.

That’s the method recommended in Sunshine kit instructions, though Martin didn’t specify steel. I use a piece of ½ in. plate glass, and it works fine, though I’ve had to heat more than once for badly warped parts. The only uncertainty with oven heating is that oven thermostats aren’t very accurate at low temps like 150° F, and the temperature dial may not go that low, so there’s some guesswork on the oven setting. My 40 year old oven dial starts at 200°, and below that it just says WARM.

Over some thirty years of building resin and encountering all manner of warped sides, ends and roofs and I have found the best remedy is to have on hand a flat piece of steel with enough mass to be a good heat sink.  I heat the metal in the oven to 150F.  When hot I take the metal out of the oven and place the offending part on the metal.  The part will absorb the heat from the metal and it can be manipulated to flatten it or even take the vertical bow out of a side of a flat kit using straight edge as a guide.  I have even taken the hump out of the roof of a one piece body with this method.  The method is very controlled with little risk of part damage.

Hi Gentlemen,

I recently bought a Funaro & Camerlengo USRA double sheath Boxcar kit at a show and I have noticed that both ends of the car floor are bent about 0.125" down out of the plane.

What is the best way to remedy this situation?

Should I let the car floor set in a pan of warm water to relax it or what ?

Hi, Jeffrey. Almost all flatcars had them. Models, for some reason, usually don't, although sometimes the rivets are there in the end sills. You can model them easily enough by mounting a Tichy or Red Caboose stake pocket on the inside of the end sills, and some Archer rivets on the outside. Bob Ellis. Oh. And drill the hole, if course

#13200 Series Kits:  1921 ARA 40 Foot Single Sheathed Boxcars built for C&NW Ry and its subsidiary, the CStPM&O RR (CMO).


These Kits are available now to order through our website (westerfieldmodels.com), by phone, mail in order or email order.


Our newest HO release is our #13200 Series Kits: 1921 ARA 40 Foot Single Sheathed Boxcars built for C&NW Ry and its subsidiary, the CStPM&O RR (CMO).  These cars were built by several different builders, in 1923, 1925 and 1927 versions, with 6,630 cars built.  These cars, due to their eight panel sides with diagonal bracing, at first appear to be copies of the USRA SS boxcars, but they are later, much improved cars and have slightly lower roofs than the USRA SS cars.
The 1923 production version of the car came with a Hutchins Dry Lading roof, Murphy 7/8 corrugated end, metal reinforced wood side door, wood running boards, Carmer uncoupling lever, vertical hand brake staff and Westinghouse K brakes.  3295 cars were built for C&NW.
The 1925 production version of the car was mostly the same but came with National top operating uncoupling levers and Ureco High Powered hand brakes which used an enclosed gear box at the base of the brake staff.  The C&NW received 1000 cars.
The 1927 production version of the car was improved over the previous years.  These cars came with a Chicago-Cleveland Viking Roof, Union Metal 4/4 Dreadnaught end, Youngstown top mounted corrugated steel side door, wood running boards, top mounted uncoupling levers and Ajax Power Hand Brakes with Westinghouse K brakes.  The C&NW received 1835 cars and the CMO 500 cars.
