Conversely, many tank car colors interpreted as aluminum were actually light gray. Richard Hendrickson accumulated a lot of evidence in that direction.

Saws for Modeling

At the Modelers Retreat, RPM in Plymouth, Minnesota, this past weekend the “UMM saw” sold by UMM-USA was discovered by some of the attending modelers.  A tool, a saw  purchased to help make saw cuts with almost no saw kerf.  And, the UMM saw cuts require little if any sanding.  If you are interested in seeing the UMM saw that improved my modeling and other saws that make our modeling easier, photos and writeup are now available on my blog I have to share photos and writeup of modeling projects on my Minneapolis & Northland Railroad Company.   If you would like to take a look please do at the following link:

I do not believe there was a single 50 CPR reefer let alone one with that configuration.   Not sure if it is close to a prototype for another line.

I like this ^ NP freight train shot - 2 10-0 box cars, then 2 10-6 box cars, and then
what looks like 2 9-6 box cars. And one of the 9-6 box cars appears to be an MEC
box car in the green paint scheme.

For what it's worth, Micro-Trains released a series of N Scale Baby Ruth cars...

https://micro-trains.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=63_68_143

The source for most of their paint scheme selections was the "Billboard Refrigerator Cars" book.  Their body styles for the models are some degree of "stand in" -- the degree of stand in is of course up to the tastes of the individual modeler.

Pages 60 to 63 of the book have most of the reference photos.  Page 63 has a shot of NADX 375 which does appear to have the signature at the bottom of the tank.  My sense is that Micro-Trains has a better photo of the car than what's in the book.

Re: Baby Ruth tank car (was tank car identity)

Daniel A. Mitchell

I have an early HO model of the refrigerator car, NADX 6246. It is of classic wood-frame, wood roof (w/stamped brass ribs), wood floor, cardboard sides, cast metal ends construction. I suspect it is a Varney model since it has a cast metal underframe beneath its wooden floor. However other similar models were made by several other manufacturers (Mantua, Red Ball, etc.). The car was constructed by my father, who may have done some kitbashing, so it’s a bit uncertain. The model predates 1951 when my father dropped out of the hobby. Thus the model’s existence likely overlaps that of the prototype making the colors likely to be correct.  Anyway …

The car has dark red sides with yellow lettering and stripes, freight car red ends, roof, and underside. The large “Baby Ruth” lettering and large yellow stripes have a fine black edge stripe. The lettering in the lower yellow stripe is black. The arrangement and position of the lettering closely matches the photo included in the post of NADX 6288. All other lettering is verbatim off the photo.

It is pretty evident from the attached photo that MicroTrains was looking at the same photo that Tim posted earlier today.  FWIW, they decided the car was white and the lettering red.  Hardly definitive unless one knows and respects the person responsible for their art, though.

I'm pretty sure someone (Silver Streak?) once offered this paint scheme for an HO model.

Currently on eBay under BABY RUTH BLUEPRINTS are 2 different listings from May 1939 for the lettering of this car plus a third which appears to be a Baby Ruth reefer. One tank car blueprint has hand written color notations in addition to lettering dimensions. One note indications “SHELL YELLOW”. Does this refer to the tank, which appears white to me but silver to others?
