Re: GN 66203 - flatcar underframe
I believe Clover House offers twisted wire or cable.
Cloverhouse.com There have been several other companies as well, look at ads in the Narrow Gauge Gazette Check Hobby Lobby for bead stringing wire, it is very fine. Or check the sewing department for heavier thread, carpet thread for example. Or find some 32-gauge stranded wire and strip the insulation. IE left overs from decoder installs would work. Re: Repack interval
Eric Hansmann
From what I recall in discussions here, this was an annual interval unless it was needed beforehand. The repack stencil for date and location would be reapplied after the work was completed.

Thanks for all the replies and images. Lester Brewer upgraded a pre painted Accurail reefer that was done for a NMRA convention as one of his blogs. Am thinking that’s a logical choice for a decal set. SLRX also had bunkerless 36’ (or 34’?) reefers. Is there a close model that could be converted to one of these cars as well? --

Re: Rapido USRA double sheath and single sheath boxcar question

Eric, I find that the RPCycs cut off at 1960. By publisher and author expressed intent. Like a certain freight car group. There is no information about freight car lives beyond 1960 in images or narrative. Not even a hint. If a researcher seeks 1960's information on old freight cars, one must build on an RPCyc article with additoinal research. Certainly Rapido used all available resources in their product research. I would surmise that we might see more USRA-derived boxcars from Rapido. As prolific as they are, they do not mind some tooling commonalities. I have no inside information on this. Jim

Let me try again copying and pasting as jpgs. These are from the Tom Underwood collection at the Barriger library, showing the rebuilt M-15n and M-15p that all the M-15k wagtontops disappeared into during 1955-56. The only difference is 40-ton and 50-ton capacity bearings, respectively.

I wonder if this Delano photo reveals a key clue about his process: is this an indicator of a filter?

Repack interval

Was there a regulated interval for repacking plain journals in the early 1950s? If not, what was a typical interval, please? I am hoping to be able to use repack dates to get realistic estimates of the dates of some tank car photos.

St Louis Refrigerator Car Co
Since Tichy’s decals are so thick I’d like to see if I can pull enough images together to make a nice thin decal set to do the 40’ bunkerless wood reefer. What prompted this is a shot of one on a RI freight in Missouri. Anyone have good images of the wood cars they can send me? Here’s the one poor image I have.
Thanks -- Charlie Duckworth Omaha, Ne.

Re: Related question: Vallejo equivalent to Polly Scale Light Freight Car Red
Interesting story about Model Air Rust 71.080. I first encountered it when I ordered Acrylic Box Car Red which was brand new back about 2013 from Micro Mark. I received 4 bottles of Vallejo Model Air Rust/Oxido 71.080 with a paper sticker saying it was Box Car Red. I still have 3 bottles of it.
My current rusty red oxide (after Charlie Duckworth's suggestion using Tru-Color) for a P&LE Rebuilt box car I am working on is 4 parts (80%) 70.982 Cavalry Brown mixed with 1 part (20%) 70.953 Flat Yellow thinned as needed for airbrushing. Although I may cheat at that step and spray the body with Tamiya Red Oxide Surface Primer and hand brush a wash of the Cavalry Brown/Flat Yellow mix over the red oxide. -- Ken Adams Omicron BA2.2x may come and go but I still live mostly in splendid Shelter In Place solitude Location: About half way up Walnut Creek Owner PlasticFreightCarBuilders@groups.io

Re: Related question: Vallejo equivalent to Polly Scale Light Freight Car Red
Lester Breuer
Peter I have been using Vallejo paints since came on market. In the Model Air or Model Color I find no equivalent. Polly
Scale Lt. Freight Car Red F414352. Best suggestion I have is to start with a mix of Model Air Rust 71.080. 50%. and Mahogany Brown 70.846. 50% which will provide the best starting point I know. You will have to change shade from there if desired. And Bruce for Floquil “Grime”. Vallejo Model Color Black Grey. 70.i62. I have no current suggestion for Weathered Black with the purplish black look. Lester Breuer

You can’t find any in the 60’s or later because they just didn’t last that long unmodified.
