Ray, barrels were not stained, but I would put steel bands on them using thin strips of aluminum foil.

As always, it depends, but in general, yes, barrels should be unstained oak.

Time to finish up barrel car project, which means that I have several dozen wooden barrels to stain.  Any suggestions would be appreciated; coming out new from barrel factory would likely be a light oak color?  Photographs?

My only reference point is Jack Daniels barrels; every year or so my father would drive to Lynchburg and come back with an empty barrel; pour in several gallons of generic whiskey, roll the barrel every month or so, and in a year you have a couple of gallons of Jack Daniels.  But those barrels were not new...

                Latest ones were built in 1923. First group was built in 1913. Many were converted to cabooses in the 800 numbers. One of those is still in existence in La Grange TX. It still has the original trucks. After war survivors were used as MoW cars until the early 1960’s.

I bought a couple of sizes of chisels from UMM that make short work of cast on ladders and grab irons. I have scribers from UMM too but have not used them yet to re-grove siding. I also use Xacto and OLFA square blades when the area needs a flat blade.

MKT 74105-75597 (30 cars)
MKTT 170000-170228 (15 cars)

above had a capy of 60,000

Those same series numbered 170 and 75 in the October 1947.

Some items of note about this photo, the large factory structure just across the river from the stockyards is the Swift packing plant. Livestock bought in the auction yard was easily taken across the river on a private bridge to be slaughtered and processed. The big light-colored building in the yard above the Swift building and below the grain elevator was Pacific Fruit Express's icing platform, which while owned by PFE was used to ice all refrigerator cars leaving Ogden. Everything needed to take the animal from field to supermarket was located in close proximity.

This photo shows a box car a friend made with gouges where he replaced the grab irons. I filled in the
gouges with clear acrylic (in a few layers for depth) and sanded with my *finger sander* as shown in this
photo. I then lightly overcoated with color, and then clear flat, which made the scratches invisible.

I’m not Charlie, but I’ve had to scribe board grooves on plastic models after removing details. I use several dental tools after the initial removal with and X-Acto chisel blade. You can read more about the process and tools in this blog post from a couple years ago.

I think that the trucks were correct for SFRD reefers - if I recall it was an early ASF truck, before the
Ride Control era. They were multi-piece trucks and had some issues... Did Intermountain ever retool them
as one piece trucks? (sideframes+bolster). Tahoe has an early ASF truck but I don't know if it's correct for
SFRD.

As I recall when these kits came out the Santa Fe gods thought that the kit trucks were perfect.  I always send a photo of the car that I am doing to Brian Leppert of Tahoe Models.  He will tell you what truck to use even if it is not his.  Use my name if you like.

It's amazing th we are now down to the proper brake step in detailing.  I recently learned that there is a Klass Morton step used on an MKT car.  Someone said that they had done some with 3D printing and offered to send some but never followed through..

Also ask Keuth Jordon and Dick Harley.
