New Red Caboose X29 body with patch panels
Mark Heiden
Hello everyone,
I was browsing the Red Caboose website today, and under Future Product Releases they list ARA/X29 boxcars lettered for CGW and LNE with patch panels. Unfortunately, the links on the Future Product Releases page don't work. Has anyone seen these cars, or know anything more about them? I've tried making patch panels from Bare-Metal Foil without much luck, so this could be just the thing I need. Thanks, Mark Heiden

You are welcome, and I think if we keep a dialogue going on this subject, we can all get better informed. I know I still have a LOT to learn. I am putting together a spreadsheet that contains dimensions of known prototype and model tank cars. I will try to get that better filled in, then make it available to the group. I can see that the modifications to the Intermountain frame are easy enough for most AC&F type 27s. The Tichy frame makes me think UTLX, so I'll be looking into that conversion a little more. I hadn't noticed the defect card holders and placard holders detail issues, so thanks for that tip too. I was wondering if by chance, the Car Cyclopedias for the 1907-15 era might have had plans for these cars. When built they were in the 53000-53129 and 55000-55399 series with the latter cars at least being built by Dominion Car and Foundry, Montreal.

Dave was the "point man" for the New England RPM meet, the first weekend in June. If the Lake Region Meet is anything like theNE one, then you really should go. FWIW, the New England meet was my first visit to a RPM meet, and I recommend it to anyone who can travel that weekend next year. The model work was beyond excellent, the clinics were done so that non engineering types would enjoy them, and the presentations were superb. Fred Freitas / Pres New England Chapter / PRRT&HS

FGEX and WFEX cars built ca. mid-late 1946
Ed Hawkins
Group,
Does anyone have photos of cars in the following two FGEX and WFEX series? I'm trying to define when there was a switch from a group of plywood-sided cars that began construction in 1944 and when the change to steel sides occurred. Having documentation on individual car numbers of known side construction will help define where the break occurred. If you have photos in these series, please identify the specific car number, whether the side construction is plywood or steel, and the reweigh station symbol and date (if readable). All of this relates to orders authorized by the War Production Board and to what extent the orders were actually completed before steel restrictions were lifted and the side construction changed. All of the cars in question are believed to be built by FGE at their plant in Indiana Harbor, Indiana. Earlier plywood-sided cars built in 1942 are not part of this research. FGEX 38266-38373. Note: 38200-38265 are known to have plywood sides. 38374 was a "one of a kind" aluminum car. 38375-38499 are known to have steel sides (125 cars built by Mount Vernon built late 1946). WFEX 66550-66624. Note: 66500-66549 are known to have plywood sides. 66625-66799 are known to have steel sides (175 cars built by Mount Vernon late 1946). Thank you in advance. Ed Hawkins

Edwin, I haven't been to the Lake Front meet, but Jim Six's accomplice Bob Harpe puts on a similar meet in Savannah, GA every April and I believe they are run similarly. The atmosphere is relaxed, lots of great modeling of all eras, excellent clinics, and everyone displaying models is willing to talk about how they did it. Here is a link to some photos I took at this years Savannah meet: http://frankg290.rrpicturearchives.net/archivethumbs.aspx?id=5172

Swift Livestock Express Stockcars
Justin Kahn
Having just picked up an old MainLine assembled kit for a 36', steel underframe car, I wonder if anyone can point me toward any photographic views of the prototype SLRX (assuming there was one with those features). I readily appreciate MainLine kits are very much the exception to the concerns of STMFC, but they are fun to build (I think more so than resin cast ones) and with some reworking can result in a credible car which will not cause serious modelers to roll on the carpet in laughter.

As others have suggested, it is almost certainly Black Rock NY ( a term that goes back to when the Senecas owned that part of the state), continguous to Buffalo and a major yard site. The Wabash reached its easternmost limit there (which would have likely motivated them to collect the mileage to the maximum extent possible) after passing through Ontario, and the Pennsylvania also had a major yard to handle westbound shipments from Harrisburg up to Buffalo and the reverse direction.

Re: Identifying a transfer point "BROCK"
Douglas Harding <d.harding@...>
Could it be an abbreviation of Black Rock, NY? ie B(lack)ROCK
If it originated on the Wabash wouldn't the Wabash want the longest haul on their own rails? Black Rock NY would be the furthest away from the ADM plant, hence the greatest milage to the Wabash. I believe this is standard routing technique unless the shipper requested a specific routing of the load. Douglas Harding Iowa Central Railroad http://d.harding.home.mchsi.com
