Was thinking along the lines of the 1909 GXL, PRR type with side doors. Have seen as old pix with 1/2 size doors on the side. Was curious if this was one of those, or a repair, which will look great on a model.

It looks like a hopper with two-piece sides, like the N&W H-2A hoppers
that were done up that way. The car appears to have been shoveled
partially out, perhaps to clear it for the re-railing/other operations
to come. You can see the centersill through the remaining load on the
floor.

Nevertheless, your comment about the door is still valid. I do not know
of any eastern gons that had these in the latter half of the 20th
century. All the ones I know of had doors in the floor, and most of
these were eliminated before WWII, probably as the reasons for their use
(customers with limited unloading means) went by the wayside.

has some odd looking oblong cutouts / patches on the lower right side.
Are these in fact patch works, or some type of side door outline?
Have seen many types of gonds with small side doors on eastern
lines, and would like to model a few. This one in the photo intrigues
me.
Anyone care to venture an answer?

I had a great time.

It was a small -- very small -- bunch but we had fun and got to know
one another a little better.

Biggest news of the day?? Ben Hom is starting on a layout that is
scheduled to be on a tour in October -- now that's bravery . . .

(interesting story, I'll let Ben tell if he chooses ... frankly, Ben, I
think your "day at the car shop" would be more interesting, but some
folks just have to see a "layout" I guess.)

Thanks for the help. All of my photos have reweigh dates that do not
reflect when the cars were actually painted.

I do recall that the boxcar red billboard scheme you mention as well as
a blue one with white lettering are well beyond our 1960 limit.

The ACY was an interesting road. They leased a lot of used equipment
which seemed to turn over about every 5 years. Since they did little if
any painting of freight cars themselves, the constant turnover of
rolling stock was what kept the paint schemes up to date.

Not to my knowledge, Mont. The only photo I have of a newly painted
yellow car is dated 1963. ACY also had a "box car red" version of the

There are no exact decals, but I think "3 foot" correct lettering
for the GATX car is straightforward, and possibly UP can be pieced
together from Champ/Microscale sets.

couple of gons following by a NH flat car. Tank cars should follow next
year.

Richard is correct, and the only GATC cars that I am aware of in that
capacity that look good are the regular service 103 Drake brass cars,
that model a 1930's (?) riveted 8k prototype, not welded, and the welded
103B-W acid (rubber-lined) car (and no, there is no riveted car, either)
produced by GATC around 1960-66 at least, done in brass by Lambert. It
is an unusual prototype, but then again, what tank car wasn't?

The B-W acid cars had the 1% dome (~ 32" diam), with unloading fixtures
on top, so you would need to do that important feature in addition to
the welded tank and GATC frame. Welded GATC tanks seem to have had a
rounder tank end than others. Luckily, the fact that it was a welded
car would let you do the dome without a riveted collar, a
scratchbuilding exercise not many would want to carry out.

Let me know if you are seriously interested in doing one of these cars,
and I will get you some more info.

This is a tough one, Fred. The Red Caboose ICC 103-W model represents
a 10K gal. car, and I'm not aware of any other models of cars with
welded tanks. The best approach, it seems to me, would be to modify an
Intermountain 8K gal. AC&F Type 27 model by converting the underframe
to represent a post-WW-II GATC underframe and filing and sanding off
all the rivets from the tank and dome. Not easy but possible.
