too much but in my way of thinking she's in love with this color and a gallon would have

No, can I run down and get a pint of PRR Freight car color in a full oil based enamel, not likely and
then who wants to thin it down enough to get it throung my Badger airbrush...
Let be realistic... the soltion is to start with colors on this end that will match something we can
match in the future... Walthers has been good enough to listen...

You guys who spend time with Bob (Bob's photos), why don't you get
him to start cataloging the prints as he has them made up and
selling them over the internet?

There are easy solutions to returns (men copying the prints and then
sending them back) - a policy of no returns. Almost anyone else
doing business with checks waits for them to clear too.

Bob's business model is different from most of the other guys
selling prints - he has multiple prints made up by a semiautomatic
machine and keeps them in inventory. He has a lot less of an
investment in each print, but traveling is a big expense most of the
others don't have. Sure they go to a few shows now and then, but he
goes almost every weekend and frequently travels for days each way
(Naperville must have been a 6 or 8 day excursion).

I've heard Bob wants to slow down and visit fewer shows; this would
be a good opportunity to cash in without going to the shows.

After each show someone fills up the books and must order additional
prints to replenish the supply.

I'm sure Bob could pick up additional sales if he hired a teenager
to catalog those prints and keep that catalog updated on the
internet. I'm sure after a year there would be 1000 plus prints on
the list.

Even guys who see Bob a couple of times a year would check the list.
Some of these new prints could be sold out by the time the get to go
through the books or the buyer could run out of money. How many of
you missed out on something you wanted at Naperville?

Bob's out of pocket expenses would be peanuts compared to the
lengthy trips. I'm sure a high schooler and whoever picks and packs
the orders would be happy with $10/hr.

Of course unscrupulous people could copy the prints, but they can do
that now if they go to a show and buy a print off the table.

I have used the tichy rivets and I think they work well, Yes, they are basically rivets on a pin. One challenge is to get the hole big enough for the pin yet smaller than the head, and another challenge is to drill the holes in a straight and even spaced line. You can also use the rivets without the stalk.

Rivet size

Could any one tell me what the head size would be on rivets used on the side of cars? Would rivets on hoppers be bigger than those on box cars due to the load being directly against the outer steel? I don't have easy access to any rail cars except an old wood sheathed caboose and the frame rivets are about 1 1/8" on it.

Further to this, has any one used Tichy rivet heads? I would expect these are "rivets on a pin" that you drill a hole for. Any info on these would be appreciated!!

Capeline Trucks

I think some of the trucks sold by Capeline have more recent tooling.
I bought a pair of the Erie caboose trucks from the E-L society and
they are certainly of recent design. Many of the old clunkers are from
the Red Ball line.

They are a little pricy, but that might have to do with the alloy that
thery cast them in which probably doesn't contain lead any more.

Thanks for the link. This means that the S, T, and U are out with K brakes and early lettering. The S is the double deck version and in the photo you can see the chain lift mechanism for the second deck (though it looks distorted from shipping?). It could be used with the deck lowered for sheep, goats, and hogs and with the deck up for taller livestock. All are shown with vertical staff brakes.

All were converted to AB brakes I believe, so I will wait for that version. The reporting marks became A. T. S. F. in 1938 and ATSF in 1943.

I see where Sunshine has come out with SK-Z and SK-5 cars in resin. You can have quite an ATSF fleet now between Intermountain, Sunshine, and Westerfield.

Yes, I have 'em in my collection. They're cast in metal, similar to
the Ulrich cars. They made a USRA hopper too.

The rivets on the gon are pretty coarse, but these cars must be at
least 50 years old.

The corner posts on the hoppers are oversized.

My recollection is that sprung trucks were included in the kits.

List,

As a first-time Naperville attendee, I can say it was an
interesting, and overall enjoyable experience - marred
only by the fire alarm at 5am Saturday morning. I was
told by the firemen that some poor unfortunate soul on the
7th floor tried to microwave their food and burned it, thus
causing all the commotion.

I spent the bulk of my time in Bob's suite going through
photo albums - talk about being in a candy store! What's
amazing is that he has some 30,000+ negatives (some recently
acquired) that he hasn't printed yet, in addition to the 700
albums that make up his printed inventory. At this rate he'll
need an 18-wheeler to haul everything to future shows.

The vendor sale on Saturday was indeed a feeding frenzy - I
regret that I somehow missed Gene Greene and Mark Vaugn's tables.
Chairs are a nice idea, but as crowded as that room was I think
they would probably cause a bigger problem than they might solve.

Of the few clinics I was able to attend, I have to say Bill McCoy's
on Central of Georgia boxcars was the most impressive. Thoroughly
researched and well presented - thank you Bill!

The only downside of the trip was Chicago itself - people there
drive worse than in LA (is that possible?).

And those toll roads have GOT to go...

Why not buy the Kadee no. 78 instead? It's a scale-size coupler like the 58 already assembled in a close-to-scale-width box. It can be installed on the floor of the Red Caboose X29 with a small screw - the hole in the coupler box is a clearance hole for a 0-80 machine screw - but it might require a shim to get the height exact.

Then you are in luck, Jon, because someone at Naperville was showing
off a beautiful newly tooled HO Dalman two-level delrin truck model, with
two styles of bolster end inserts, and properly located brake shoes/beams.
I forget his name (!) but he used to work for Model Die Casting and is
now setting out on his own. He wants to sell them with .088 wheels but
I encouraged him to sell just the trucks in large quantities :-) I need at
least 25 pairs of 'em...

When ConCor production was in Chicago (Bensenville) they used a variety of
paints.
The Pad Printing operation used inks specially formulated for that process
obtained from commecial sources.
Some Floquil and Scalecoat paints were used (I've saw Gallon cans of both
that were left behind when production moved to Arizona) as well as the
industrial coatings cited.
ConCor had some of their items decorated overseas in factories in Austria,
Yugoslavia, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Hong Kong, China, and Japan. Other
items were molded, decorated and final assembled in the Chicago area. Some
product was shipped to Bensenville and final painted/printed and assembled
in Chicago. For a brief time after ConCor moved to Arizona production was
there with some piecework done across the border in Mexico as well.

level Dalman trucks were from new tooling replicating the Cape Line
Two-level Dalman #T-24. John had told me that he had obtained the
rights to the Cape Line trucks from the owner after Ertel sold them back
to them.
Was there a connection between the line of Cape Line trucks and those
from the M. Dale Newton Red Ball Line?<

Last first. The Cape Line trucks (to my knowledge) used the same molds
as the Red Ball trucks. I missed what John Green is manufacturing? I would
like to get a bunch of Dalman two-level but have always felt that the Red
Ball (Cape Line) and Eastern Car Works trucks just didn't look very good. I
would like to see a plastic one piece truck at the level of Accurail or IM!

The Red Ball kit is not that good. It lacks a rivet line along the side
where the floor intersects the fishbelly side. No interior detail. I
forget
how many panels it has, but I am not sure it has a specific prototype. I
got a pair and really have not pursued finding a prototype for them. The
thin cast-metal sides would be fun to dent...but 65' DE mill gons didn't
get
a lot of punishment like the 50 and 40 foot gons.

A list of available steam-era 65' gon models versus needed prototypes will
be very short.
