NYC flat cars
Bruce F. Smith V.M.D., Ph.D. <smithbf@...>
Hey y'all
Many moons ago I asked y'all about some NYC flats (ECW 90 ton and Red Caboose 40 ft)...now the time has come to actualy paint and letter them I have some more questions: Who makes decals for NYC flats circa 1944? (do I need to use N-scale boxacar decals for the herald?) What is a good NYC "mineral red"...esp in the polyscale line? TIA Happy Rails Bruce Bruce F. Main lines got 9' ties of hardwood. Branch lines could get 8' ties of hardwood or "other" woods. The old track plans will tell you which is expected depending on the geography and traffic. -------------------- J. Stephen (Steve) Sandifer mailto:steve.sandifer@... Re: Shell Tank Cars

Charlie Morrill asks:
Did the aluminum paint with black lettering schemes on Shell tank cars asAFAIK, no Shell Petroleum cars (Eastern Shell SEPX, Roxana RPX, or Shell of Calif. SCCX) were ever painted aluminum. Many Shell Chemical cars (SCMX) were painted aluminum with black lettering, however, and that practice continued in the 1950s and '60s. Richard H. Hendrickson Ashland, Oregon 97520

Actually, I was overgeneralizing a bit. SCCX cars began to get the ShellNot so fast Ned, I think the car is OK if you remove the logo (please(Shell of Calif. did put Shell logos aboveThe 50s! Oh poop another car into the trash can. logos after WW II, so there were at least a few of them around as early as 1947. For Ned's purposes, however, Maryland would have been very far afield for SCCX cars after the WW II oil transportation crisis had subsided; the SCCX fleet was based at Watson (Los Angeles Harbor) and Martinez (San Francisco Bay area) in California and used almost entirely to transport refinery products to west coast wholesalers. I dont know of anyone who makes leaf springs anymore. BC Models makes archSeveral Eastern Car Works freight car trucks (e.g. Birdsboro Andrews) have separate spring inserts which are coils on one side, leaf springs on the other, and their Barber Bettendorf caboose trucks have inserts which are leaf springs on both sides. These inserts are molded styrene so they can easily be trimmed/shimmed to fit the spring openings in other mfrs.' trucks. Precision Scale catalogs brass leaf springs, similar to the old Silver Streak springs but presumably somewhat smaller, as they are intended for use in D&RGW narrow gauge caboose trucks. They're item # HO-31968, 12 per package, $1.75 (according to my now somewhat outdated catalog). Richard H. Hendrickson Ashland, Oregon 97520

Seaboard woodracks
salfan2001 <ThisIsR@...>
Hello:
I just read a product annoucement/review of Tichy's ACL woodrack and I'm rather confused. The annoucenment indicates this car is similar to Seaboard's R-3 class woodracks. Is this a typo? I know Seaboard had R-4 and R-5 racks as well as the "R-1" class. I have never seen any reference to R-3 or R-2 classes. The "R-1" was an old flatcar with bent rails on it acting as a cradle for the pulpwood. Was there an R-2/R-3 class of woodracks? I hope someone out there can answer this question. Thanks! Re: Shell Tank Cars
Jon Miller <atsf@...>
I don't think so! This is a note I have with the cars that Richard posted.
sic--worse news. The SCCX cars modeled by LL were originally built by AC&F for Shell's midwestern subsidiary, the Roxana Petroleum Corp., and carried RPX reporting marks until about '42-'43, when 150 of them were transferrend to Shell of CA. So to model those cars ca. '41 you need to completely re-letter them and no decals are currently available. Richard really does need to get the tank car book done<VBG>. Replacing Leaf Springs
Justin Kahn <jacekahn@...>
Although I have been out of HO for nearly twenty-five years, I would guess the "Walthers" leaf springs were part of the Silver Streak line from when Walthers bought it. They always worked well and looked convincing (at least in that simpler time). I would not be surprised if PSC didn't have some, too.
I am a bit puzzled by Norm's saying that EACH side of EACH truck required two leaf springs, as I don't recall ever seeing any like that, not even in O scale. Jace Kahn

Not so fast Ned, I think the car is OK if you remove the logo (please(Shell of Calif. did put Shell logos aboveThe 50s! Oh poop another car into the trash can. correct me if I'm wrong!), and it isn't that hard to do! (and then you have different car from the "masses" <G>). First try solvaset (or other decal solution) with a pencil eraser, and move on to grit blasting if that doesn't work. Happy Rails Bruce Bruce F. Thank you for the information. I believe you had posted information about the content of next Volume earlier, but missing bit was when we might expect the next issue. As my earlier posting stated you and all those associated with RPC have done an excellent job of publishing a world class serial. Personally, I understand that work of the caliber of RPC requires a lot of time to accomplish and implies the interval between volumes is numbered in months rather than weeks. Thank you, Mike Carson
