Just because something isn't listed doesn't mean it's not available. Sprues
from most kits are available by calling and asking.

Desplaines is a grocery store full of parts and decals.
They also deal on the internet. Many of my strolls down
Ron's aisles resulted in new projects and the further advancement
of my hobby skills. He keeps all of his detail parts out in the open
allowing you to hold and examine the parts.

FWIW, a few years ago I ordered the War Bonds C&EI car since I model
1943. It was a great kit to assemble.
Later I happened to be looking through some WWII era "Railroad"
magazines and found in one a reference about C&EI painting this
slogan on some cars, listing the car number of the first car to be so
painted. I checked my model and found that it had the same number.
DPH is to be commended for outstanding prototype research.

A lot of the coal is still in the ground at Minera. The first mine
flooded (all were shaft mines in the steam era) in the early 1900's
and another was dug a couple miles away. I have never been at the
site, so cannot say more. However, it is not speculation that the
RG&EP existed to haul the cannel coal. A limited amount of the coal
is still mined there.

Would like to have seen those RG&EP photos. Ralph H. Carlson had a
couple of shots he took there. His entire collection of 49,000 loco
roster shots went to the Western Collection of the Denver Public
Library (I prepared his will). They have not cataloged them yet, so
unavailable.

The primary freight equipment of the road was a series of steel side-
dump cars, if I remember correctly. That is why the equipment was so

Here's a nice interior view (grab it now, this Ebay seller
will delete it very soon) -- Note how the boards only go about
3/4 of the way up the interior. Since these cars were mostly
used for bagged cement, I guess the owner didn't need to waste
money on lining the whole interior.

I remember watching a signal maintainer waddle from switch to switch
filling the lamps with oil in 1969 or '70. This was in the Soo Line's
yard at North Fond du Lac, WI. The Soo's wood cabooses also would have
been still using kerosene marker lamps at this time, as they never had
electricity. However, at some point in the sixties or seventies,
reflective paddles were deemed OK for night use as markers.

My best guess is mid to late sixties was the end of kerosene marker lamps.

There is also an Australian outfit called Molco (?) which makes
a very nice diagonal panel roof.
Nick MOLOCO does indeed produce a gorgeous Stanray
diagonal panel ZU eave roof.

Such a simple suggestion. A pity it is not so simple to setup or maintain.
I suspect that the return may not pay for the effort.

Mike has censured many of messages criticizing the business practices of the Walthers company. They are in business to make money, not serve the hobby.
They make money By Serving the Hobby. If they weren't doing a good job they would not be in business.

I work for a store that does a lot of business with Walthers, three or more orders a week. If someone orders something I can tell them if it is in stock and when to expect to see it. If they want to know how many are in stock I can have an answer in three minutes.

If we had to deal separately with every company whose product Walthers carries, we couldn't do that. Instead of just putting it on the current order (due in the store in a week to ten days), we would have to accumulate orders until we had enough for a minimum order from a company. That could take months!

The test of whether a company is doing a good job is who is their competition. If Wally was doing a crappy job competition would be cropping up all over. It isn't. Their only close competition is Hobby Horizons and if they didn't have a monopoly on Athearn and MDC they wouldn't be in the game.

Walthers is not perfect but they currently are the best game in town.

And since we were speaking about parts, we stock a lot of them. 30+ double sided pegboard panels of them and more coming. A big pain at inventory time!

Now back to steam era freight cars. I like the series on gondolas.

That was probably metallurgical grade coal or coke in the MP hoppers
out there. It may have come from Arkansas or Illinois.

Down here in south Texas, there was some lignite coal (quite nice
lignite coal on the I-GN at Rockdale, Texas - almost as good quality
as bitumenous), but no anthracite. It was used locally as fuel.
Also found in poorer quality at Lytle, Texas on MP.

The anthracite used in water treatment plants most certainly came
from Pennsylvania - it was specially cleaned, washed and graded for
that purpose.

There was some bitumenous coal on the T&P west of Ft Worth. It had
no special characteristics, other than for use as fuel. T&P rostered
some double offset-side hoppers in the steam era for this traffic.

There was/is some wierd, unique coal in a small area that was served
by the I-GN at Laredo, Texas. A shortline, Rio Grande & Eagle Pass,
ran northwest out of Laredo to a "cannel" coal field at Minera, Texas
on the Rio Grande. This was a waxey coal - I have no idea what it
was used for, but it had a specialty use during the steam era -
possibly as a component of varnishes. It was similar, but not
identical to, gilsonite in the Book Cliff area of Colorado.

Note that Piedras Negras, Mexico is across the river from Eagle Pass,
Texas. Piedras Negras means "black rock" in Spanish - coal, but not
the cannel type, despite the nearness to Minera. There was a huge
steel rolling mill on the Mexican side during the steam era. A now-
deceased friend purchased the RG&EP rail and equipment in 1942 so
that he could construct the AFbase at Del Rio - he could not obtain
heavy equipment any faster way in those times. Their only loco was
an ex-LV GE 44-tonner, I recall.

Scale Model Supply in St Paul is another well stocked shop. I don't
know if hey deal on the internet. I was amazed to see a wall of Grandt
line parts last time I was there. They still have Front Range kits on
the shelf at full list price of course.
