Here is an interesting list of grain inspection track
releases. I would consider it highly likely that all
these cars were loaded on the CB&Q in Northern or
Western Illinois. Each road operated their own grain
inspection tracks.

These weights are small and heavy. I try to install them over the
car trucks on house cars. This leaves the floor clean if I want to
model the door in the open position.

You can buy these by the pound on eBay. Search for (you guessed
it) "Stick on weights." Least expensive, but you may need to find some
buddies to go in on it with you.

No Rich, you are wrong. I will not go into the details here except to say
that the X29 patch panel cars we received were not like the ART cars, it was a
different process. I am currently trying to find out why Greg Martin made
such an attack on us. When that is resolved I will tell you the FACTS.
Something that Greg was sadly short of. Red Caboose and the Amarillo Railroad
Museum know the FACTS. You should not state things about which you know very
little.

I didn’t have time to get in the discussion on Saturday about the grading/classification and cleaning of box cars, but I’d like to make a few comments on the subject. These are based on memories of my experiences in the 60’s and 70’s.

Classification of box cars was not an exact science and the railroads were unable to agree on a uniform standard. The problem was that the actual usage of box cars was not amenable to a four step grading system. Each grade had certain requirements for roof condition, interior walls, floors, cleanliness and other factors. A car that flunked any one of these requirements for a grade would go to the next lower grade. One road’s class A might not suit another’s loading requirements. Even in different regions on the same railroad, grades would have different uses. For example, on the NYC in Buffalo a class A car was likely to be used for flour loading and class B for grain loading. In Boston class A might be for newsprint loading and B for something in palletized cartons. A splintered lining might not disqualify a car for flour loading, but it would for newsprint.

The term “AAR classification” was essentially meaningless. While in theory it might have existed, it was not useful. In the late 70’s, the AAR and FRA funded the Freight Car Management program, essentially a research effort towards ways to improve car utilization. One of the interesting projects in which I participated was as project manager for compilation of a Manual of Car Utilization Practices and Procedures. It gave me a chance to visit many railroads and document systems they had developed to improve car utilization. One of the FCM projects was an attempt to develop a computerized multi-factor car grading system. I don’t recall that it got any useful results.

Now to address cleaning, I’ll end this and make another post, in the interest of not trying to cover too many subjects in one.

Guys -

Go to any plumbing supply house (or, for that matter, Home Depot, in
the plumbing section) and ask about their sheet lead used for shower
pans. Better yet, go to a plumbing company and ask them for the lead
scraps from installation of shower pans. Should be very cheap, about
1/8" thick lead sheet - enough to last a lifetime!

railroad that bypassed Moscow, and pretty much killed off the town by
doing so, later became the Dodgeville branch of the Illinois Central.

You can order .040" and .062" lead sheet online from Small Parts Inc.,
www.smallparts.com. The 40 thou comes out to 37 cents an ounce in 12"-square
sheets, and the 62 thou is 40 cents an ounce in the same size sheet. Of
course, that's before you add in shipping charges from Florida, but if you
don't mind paying for convenience, there it is. (Pennies are definitely
cheaper, easily available, and non-magnetic, but they aren't as dense, which
counts for a lot when weighting flats and gons. They're harder to cut, too!)

We should not hear of assignment of any general service car type. It was not permitted by Car Service Rules, and became illegal when the ICC adopted the AAR's Car Service Rules. That applies not only to box cars, but also to ordinary flats, gons and hoppers.

I cast weights for hopper cars to put in the cavity under the slope
sheet and inboard of the slope sheet support sheet over the bolster.

I do this by cutting a triangular notch in the edge of a 1x3 the same
shape as the cavity I intend to fill. I then sandwich this between two
pieces of plywood and clamp the three pieces in a vise. I then melt
solder into the cavity. When it has cooled, I remove the three boards
from the vise and voila, cast weight for a hopper car! Actually I cut
several cavities in the same 1x3 so that I have a few weights cooling
at once.

Kadee under-the-track magnets can attract steel car weights at floor level. Hard to see, but I've had cars equipped with super free-rolling trucks like Kato's actually move by themselves toward the magnets.

None of the Hobby shops up here carry "Stick on Weights".

I went to every auto parts store I could find (before giving up) and
could not fine any. Most of the clerks in these stores had no idea what
I was talking about. When I explained that they were used to balance
alloy wheels they "got it"

Then I went to a tire store, and while the would not sell me any they
had in stock ("I would not have any to use"), they did pre order me 1
box each of 1/4 oz and 1/2 oz stick on weights.

I think I got a life time supply, without paying for shipping (and lead
is heavy!!!).

Unless the steel is axle-height, I don't think it's going to have
any effect unless you're using super-magnets for uncouplers.
Plenty of models come with steel weights.
