This may be obviouos, but the term "dreadnaught" was applied to the first battleships developed by England prior to (and somewhat leading to) the first world war.
The term means fear nothing.... it didn't work out to be the ultimate weapon as we know from subsequent history. I am pretty sure the marketers lifted the term from what was around the turn of the century through the twenties a hot technolorgy. Charlie Vlk

This might be of some help understanding from where the term originated: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreadnought . In general, the manufacturers of railroad specialties like car ends and roofs like macho-sounding names: Dreadnaught, Indestructible, Viking, etc. Pure marketing. I'm sure Richard will jump in here shortly with more specific information. Kind regards, Garth G. Groff Clark Propst wrote:

Monon gondola
Stephen Bishop
Hello group:
In the September, 2004 Mainline Modeler, Mont Switzer explained how he modified an Intermountain HO composite gondola to more closely resemble Monon 33171. He used elongated spiral ends cast by Chad Boas (Car Shops) and decals from Model Railroad Supply. I would like to replicate his work but "googling" hasn't located Car Shops and Model Railroad Supply doesn't seem to have these decals on their list. Can anyone give me some direction? Thanks. On the Santa Fe, at least, the slogan cars disappeared very rapidly. Richard Hendrickson

Many of the cars were de-roofed and equipped with side discharge outlets for ballast service. But that was well after the STMFC era. Pecos River Brass also imported a couple of rebuild models. Tim O'Connor

Buy More War Bonds slogans
sparachuk <sparachuk@...>
I have a question for the group; how quickly after the war did the "Buy More War Bonds" slogans disappear from rolling stock? Was it policy to repaint ASAP? I haven't seen many photos of cars in the late forties with the slogans. I have a few cars with the slogan and I'll probably get more because they speak so clearly of the mood of their time.

While Mr. Welch has provided a great source of information for wood reefers
for these three companies through the modelling "e-'zines"? I was wondering if there is any information about steel reefers for these companies, in terms of books or magazine articles? Also, I know Sunshine produces wood reefer kits for these, but does anyone offer kits for steel reefers for the companies? In case this assists with answering questions, I'm interested in 1952. Thanks much in advance, Greg Snook

Yesterday, in the attached message, I wrote "...you don't have to be a genious to write for one of the three e-zines...". It takes a real genious to mis-spell the word genius. This kind of humor works for Clark because he executes it perfectly. Unfortunately, it appears I am still his student. John John Golden Bloomington, IN

My Mistake - Ray Breyer's right - NKP War Emergency Cars
Ralph Miller <nkpwle@...>
Jim and all
Ray Breyer's right about the April rebuild of most of these cars to the 8200 series steel sides. Going back after I posted and looking again at my 7/1966 ORER it shows 96 cars listed in the 8200-8299 series in NKP paint and these cars show the XML designation with DF equipment. The same ORER shows only 4 cars in service in N&W paint in series 208200-208299 at this time and while they do show the XML designation there's no indication of DF equipment on these 4. One unusual item about these rebuilds: the doors were replaced from the original 6' Superior to 9' Youngstown - quite a significant increase. Sorry about that Ray. You just never want to say "never". Totally forgot about the rebuilds! Ralph Miller

Jim - The NKP 8000-8199 Pullman-Standard series war emergency cars, built in 1944, were never steel sheathed and continued as built into the merger with the N&W. If you have Ted Culotta's "Steam Era Freight Car Reference Manual" there's an excellent builder's photo of car 8026 on page 168. I have the 7/1966 ORER which lists these cars as having only 22 left in NKP paint but none are listed at this time with Evans equipment. Nor does my 1964 NKP Equipment Diagrams list them as having this equipment installed either. Surprisingly, the 1966 ORER does list the N&W renumber to 208000-208199 but does not indicate there were any still in service in N&W paint by July of '66. Hope Intermountain gets the dreadnaught ends correct on these. Ralph Miller Craftsman's Model Railroad Supply
