Hey Yuze Gize,Greg, I will be there as a consultant, but of course I don't want a kit as I have already built the model. FWIW, our discussion of this model prompted me to build a P2K kit for a DT&I 52'6" Greenville gondola that was in my stash and equip the model with racks and auto frames. Had to install the frames one at a time -tedious - but I'm well pleased with the results and will photograph both models together and send you digital images. I won't have last year's UP stock car finished (or even started) because my choice was to either build that model or finish, paint, letter, and weather two brass models of wine tank cars so that I could show those models as part of my clinic. The wine cars won out. Hope y'all have had a good Thanksgiving break. Sandra's sister and her husband are here from Benicia (fortunately we all get along well, so there are none of the common family tensions) and we all had dinner Thursday night with the Ashland Orphans, a group of twelve or so friends who have no family in town. Turkey, ham, way more food of every kind than we could eat, and lots of good fellowship. Best to Sandy, Richard Hendrickson

I have Champ HN-81. It includes the road name, various size reporting marks and end reporting marks, numbers for sides and ends. It does contain the round herald, whicm mesures out to 30 scale inches. It also contains the "symbol of Service" slogan, but it is "stacked" symbol of over Service, rather than angles as on Ted's set. The size of the slogan is larger than on Ted's set as well. The set contains enough to letter two cars. Hope this helps. Jim Brewer Glenwood MD

Trucks and brake steps for Erie gondolas
Mark Heiden
Hello everyone,
I'm looking for some information regarding some Erie gondolas in the series ERIE 11000-11599, built January to May 1946. A builder's photo of ERIE 11050 can be found at: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/el/frt/erie11050adb.jpg A scan of an equipment diagram for these cars can be found at: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/el/frt/erie-frt-3-4.gif The diagram lists the trucks for ERIE 11000-11149 and ERIE 11350-11599 as Cast Steel Double Truss, AAR coil 1915 design. From the description and the photo, would Eastern Car Works 9053, 90-ton Bettendorf friction bearing, be a good match? The diagram indicates an Apex Tri-Lock Metal Brake Step. Would this be the open-grid type as seen on boxcars, or some sort of metal plate with round holes in it? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark Heiden

Hey Yuze Gize It is that time.
Greg Martin
Hey Yuze Gize,
In keeping with Tradition... This is the formal announcement for the 2010 Cocoa Beach Hands on Presentation, AKA Shake N Take (thank you to our own Mont Switzer) This years event is extremely limited so if you don't have any intent of building the kit and just want the handout and you MUST BE THERE then let me know, I will keep a separate list for those folks. If you WILL BE THERE FOR SURE and want the kit let me know as we'll take reservations for the first 20 folks, the balance will be first come first serve at the door. As usual there is no cost to the registered attendee. With very special thank you to Richard Hendrickson we will be presenting a 41' IL DT&I/GM&O gondola conversion. The kit is made possible by a donation from Athearn Trains. It will consist of resin ends and Tahoe Model Works TMW-207 AAR Self-Aligning Spring Plankless Double Truss Trucks. This year will be a bit different than in the past, as the kits will not come in the form of a knock-down kit as there were none available and the kits will have to be striped by the modeler. Unfortunately I wasn't able to secure the kits prior to the change at Athearn. Nonetheless, with this minor shortfall we decide it was still a very worthy prototype for most modelers as the life span actually exceeds the scope of this list even though the cars were built in 1941. The only real impact is one extra page to my handout on how I propose you strip the car safely and on extra slide in the Power Point. As resourceful as you/we are as modeler(s) if this should cause second thoughts please, please don't take a kit that another might finish. BUILD THEM AND THEY SHALL COME... 3^) Greg Martin

GM&O color recommendation
jerryglow2
I'm building last year's Naperville gift which is for a GM&O boxcar built in 1940 or 1942 (two number series possible). What's a good color recommendation for GM&O for this era into the '50s? I'd prefer a Modelflex color as it's the most available but any you use.

Did your source give any idea when the earlier version of this car would be available? I would assume that he is doing them for Martin??? Best regards, Tom Olsen 7 Boundary Road, West Branch Newark, Delaware, 19711-7479 (302) 738-4292 tmolsen@...

told by the guy who made the masters. During research for the project they could not find any photos of cars with Youngstown doors with Roman lettering and, therefore, the safe conclusion he reached is that the door replacement occured during the 1955 rebuilding by which time Gothic was standard. He was standing behind me as I purchased my kit at Naperville and advised me that the Gothic lettering was the only safe bet. Sunshine went to the usual NYC sources for reference and found that the rebuilding data and lot numbers was even more convoluted and inconclusive than typical. If anyone has a photo of a Youngstown door car and Roman lettering please stand up and give us the car number and reweigh date. FWIW, work is being done on masters for the increased height rebuilds with the original roofs and panel doors which will be certainly correct for Roman lettering. Bill

I was misled by the info on Ted Culotta's web site, that these were straight-side-sill cars. I had some thoughts of a kitbash and adding a Duryea representation, but I may go with one of the earlier WM classes instead--though they were 52' 6" IL. Re: Western Maryland gondola question
Larry Kline
The WM diagram ca. 1962 says:
Car series 52001-52186 Bettendorf Car series 52187-52362 Andrews I posted a photo of 52176 in the files section which shows a cast steel truck with a spring plank and a snubber. Its awaiting moderator approval. I believe that the ever thrifty WM used trucks and brake components from retired wood gondolas in the 50001-50499 series when these cars were built by Bethlehem Steel in 1945. There were 372 gondolas remaining in this series in the 1-1945 ORER. The wood gons are gone, and the 52001-52362 series is listed, in the 7-1945 ORER. Tony, I'm curious what you are using to model this series of 48 ft 6 in IL steel gons. Larry Kline Pittsburgh, PA Tony Thompson asked: Does anyone know what trucks were applied to WM gondolas in the 52001-52362 number series?

Re: New ART Steel Reefer Run Is In

Therefore, this example shows that the MPHS/ARM model having the 1950s
scheme could also conceivably have its original 24000-24449 car number, particularly cars repainted between 1951 and 1954. Just to add some additional information, in Green's Refrigerator Car Color Guide, page 15, there is a photo of ART 24582 in this scheme shown on the PRR in 1954. Jerry Michels

So just POSSIBLY it might be that the photo of ART 33320 was a
poor choice for prototype illustration? <g> Yes, Tony, I guess so. I will try to get a corrected photo posted to the website, or explain the difference. Jerry Michels
