'Next winter' shows you know how long it takes.

And by the way, A.W.G., who are you? It's polite to use a first and last

Also, if someone is attending a show in the near future, and Sunshine

would be forever grateful.

They are being closed out. It might be worth a letter to Martin Lofton to inquire.

Great Northern Auto Boxcars GN 43900 to 43999

railsnw1 <railsnw@...>

Trying to track down photos of GN automobile boxcars in the series GN 43900 to 43999. Particularly in later years after the steel doors were applied. Also the end doors are shown being welded shut sometime between 1948 and 1955. Anyone able to nail down specific dates? Interested in cars 43940 and 43948 that went to Longview Fibre in Longview, WA.

Also does anyone have GN standard lettering drawings from the 1950's?

Thanks,

Richard Wilkens

Disposal of an estate

Al and Patricia Westerfield <westerfield@...>

One of my customers, Pat Finley of Dayton, OH passed away recently. His wife, Shirley, contacted me regarding selling his collection. I passed her request on to the pres. of NMRA who lives in her area but she got no response. Is there anyone in the area that knows of an *honest* dealer who would give her a fair price or is a list member willing to or knows someone who can give her a realistic appraisal? If so, contact me off list (westerfield@...) and I'll pass on her information. - Al Westerfield

Re: Bowser PRR X31b 61321

The "Return to Midvale" assignment was for the car to be returned to Midvale Yard on the Chestnut Hill Branch in Philadelphia. On arrival it would be delivered to the Budd Company auto parts stamping plant there. This plant stamped out fenders, doors and other auto parts. Midvale Steel company was not part of the Budd complex, but was a specialty steel plant owned by another entity.

When I was an operator working at Overbrook Block & Interlocking Station, I handled a number of eastbound freight trains (notably FJ-2) that set off empty auto parts cars in the 52nd Street receiving yard that were destined for the Midvale Budd plant. Every night, two "Runners" (one from Margie Street Yard and one from Midvale Yard would bring loaded cars to 44th Street Yard for pickup for westbound PR-3.

As it was noted, by the mid-60s, X31s were no longer used in this service, at least not for Midvale Service. I worked at Overbrook off and on as an extra operator from 1965 to 1968, when I bid the 2nd trick position and worked there until 1972 when I went into management. During my time there all of the cars assigned to auto parts service were 50' double door box cars of PRR, Wabash and several other roads ownership.

After Amtrak became the owner of the Northeast Corridor and Septa owning the Chestnut Hill Branch, most of the local freight traffic disappeared. All freight operation was discontinued between Glenloch (West of Paoli and Philadelphia on the Philadelphia to Harrisburg Main Line. Budd closed their plants in Philadelphia in the mid-80s. Conrail abandoned the Yards at 44th/52nd Street, Midvale and those between west of Frankford Jct. and Zoo approximately the same time as Amtrak did everything they could to discourage the operations.

Ben, I forgot about my 10/48 ORER. (data as of 7-31-48) 61321 is not listed as XAP so it was either removed from that service or wrecked by that date. FHP(Frank H. Peacock)

From the data points that we've gathered so far in this thread, sometime between 10/47 and 7/50. So for John's 1952-53 timeframe, we can conclude that the car was converted back to a general service boxcar by then.
