Dear Frank

I had not picked up the variations for the Hutchins ends. As for the yellow stripes on their boxcars, I do not know when these began to appear. None of the 3 books I have on the NC&StL talk anything about their freight cars nor did the FCJ monograph put a date to this scheme. My bet is that your research makes you are the authority on this, at least I am nominating you as such!

Bill, I too am glad Martin is doing the NC&StL XM-32 as it was the largest class on the railroad in 1947. I wonder which Hutchins end he is doing? I did a quick check of one that I saw in 1987 in Illinois and it had two section Hutchins ends, not the four section end shown on p.23 of Freight Cars Journal No. 63. This same publication has as you know some good stenciling diagrams in it including the "To and From Dixieland" (Brush Stroke) and the same in the much finer, earlier script lettering. A question for you and the group: When did the N&C begin to use the large horizontal stripes on box cars? The earliest that I can document is Sept. 1946. I have a feeling that in my era not many of these would be around, which is okay since I like the other "To and From Dixieland" Stencils better. FHP (Frank H. Peacock)

I've sold a few Sunshine kits on eBay that I shouldn't purchased in the

doesn't sell over the Internet nor does he accept credit cards or checks

I'll now go ahead and order the kits I want and be happy to wait for when

that kind of money.

Robert, The July 2009 price list together with the November 2009 New
Products sheet is the most up-to-date information available. I'm hoping to
see an updated list at Naperville in October. Sunshine is slow to
discontinue kits. I'd feel safe ordering the vinegar tank and anything else
that's listed on the 2009 price list. I can't guarantee any of this though.
Sunshine doesn't notify me when a kit is discontinued. I have to gather
that
information by noticing what is no longer on the price list and it's
difficult to see what's not there. Sunshine normally discontinues a kit
only
when they run out of instructions, decals or detail parts, or if the molds
are worn out and Martin figures it's not worth it to make new ones.

Well, it _was_ one of Martin's Anniversary kits, and those always seem to do well on eBay. I don't know if Martin actually limited production of his Anniversary kits, but eBay bidders certainly seem to think he did.

Quick answer in - none.

A compress was just a warehouse that received cotton bales from the cotton gins and compressed them to make more fit into ships for shipping. These were more or less centralized on the route from the production areas to the using/overseas shipping areas.

True. However, when I mentioned "Cotton Compress", I meant the entire process from ginning to compressing to the processing of the seeds for oil and the byproduct of hulls/meal. The two facilities I am modeling, one in Elgin, Texas and the other in Austin did the whole operation.

And I was thinking of the Cotton Compress as a stand alone business. Columbia, SC is one location that I know of and there were several in Texas. Even though the cotton was in compressed bales from the gin, a cotton compress business had more powerful compresses and reduced the bale size by at least a third again.

A Cotton Compress was one of those businesses the usually had a "milling in transit" tariff.

Re: NeoLube in a pencil?

Richard New <loco7mo@...>

Hmm. I was always told that the "Hob-E-Lube" 7-pak workbench assortment (HL650) was better. For any lubing.

I don't know, but this might be useful for very small "spot" lubes...
