I was looking at the photo of the tank cars in the Shorpy photo and realized that one of the tank cars must be an Athearn car with its oversized dome. It is the 4th car on the string of cars going

A (typically) spectacular photo by Delano. However, the comment

So it's now becoming clear to me that I've misremembered.
That and I've built too many Sunshine tankcar kits overall. Some do come with a PVC tank core.

I am a bit confused by your question. Are you referring to kit 60.3, Fleischmann - Standard Brands? If so, my kit does not have a PVC tube to form the tank. However there is a PVC tube

It's been about 10 years since I built mine but I don't recall having a PVC
tube with it. I do distinctly remember hunting around and finding an old
broom handle in the garage that did the trick for
