There is no need to reinvent the wheel as the Microscale set has all of the variations of the appropriate monogram, four different "THE RIGHT WAY" slogan for both two and three bay covered

The CGRHS worked with Microscale to produce a set for the C of G covered hoppers in the original lettering scheme. They are still available as far as I know.

Rather than the score and rod method, it might be easier to use Archer weld lines.
It'll need repaint either way.

Alternatively and w/o removing the running board and latitudinals I could use my favorite tool, the single edged razor blade as a wide chisel, cleave off the roof
